Ran a search through the forums and the site and came up dry, also read through the skills and also dry.
My question:
Is there a skill or something I can do to reduce the time it takes to target lock another ship? Does the items in the hardpoints have anything to do with this? Example: Mounting standard missile launchers on, say, a Raven. (not that I ever would, just wondering)
Thanks

Edited by: Letouk Mernel on 03/06/2008 13:41:22 Targetting time depends on your ship's scan resolution vs. the enemy's signature radius, or, in other words, if you have a big ship trying to target a small ship, it will take ages.
There are skills under Electronics that can help a little (Signature Analysis?), but the only way you'll see big improvements is to install Sensor Boosters with scan resolution scripts. Alternately, some of the Electronics ships can remote sensor boost you for the same effect, and the Gallente specialize in sensor dampener EWar.

Skills : Signature Analysis Survey
There are likely modules and scripts you can use as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legion of Shadow is looking for recruits. |

Signature Analysis will do the trick but not Survey. The Survey skill improves use of ship and cargo scanners.
In addition to the modules that you can fit to your ship or that someone else can fit to their ship and boost your targeting speed remotely, there are gang bonuses available that improve this (very nice for PvP), if someone in your gang has the appropriate leadership skills and is set to booster in the gang.

Signal Amplifiers should give you a scan resolution bonus of up to 15%.
Sensor Boosters should give you a scan resolution bonus of up to 30%.
(Also, please note that putting a warp core stabilizer on your ship will give you a scan resolution penalty of up to -50%.)

Ard rules and I fail. Survey will increase your salvaging speed I believe, as that's a kind of scanner as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legion of Shadow is looking for recruits. |

There are also modules that will increase your target lock speed.
Read the module description and attributes carefully.
Get a copy of EFT and you can screw around with fittings and see how it effects different stats before you plunk down the ISK.

Survey will not increase you Salvaging speed either.
It only affects Ship, Cargo and Survey scanners.
The specific effect, is that it decrease the scan time of modules that require the Electronics skill directly.
Salvagers require Salvaging, they do not actually require Electronics. The requirement for Electronics is indirect as it is required by the skill Survey which is required by the skill Salvaging, but neither have a direct impact on your Salvaging module.

In addition to the great points these guys have been making above, I'd like to point out that if you're flying a ship with more than five maximum target locks available, you can also train to Targetting V. This means that you can hold more targets at a time, which reduces the overhead of having to frequently find new targets when you are for instance, quickly popping a lot of frigates or destroyers in a PvE mission.
It's an indirect solution, but will pay off over time.

Sorry but that's a newbie response. You forgot that if you include a scan resolution script the bonus doubles to 60% which is excellent. _______________

Wow a tad erudite..
30% was technically correct but hey...
Why dont you help us noobs out and explain scripts, what they are, how to use them, where to get them?

Scripts can be found in the Ammo section of the market. There are not really that many of them and I believe there are only two categories (Sensor scripts for Sensor Boosters, Tracking scripts for Tracking CPUs).
The former, can be things such as a booster to targetting range, or scan resolution (faster lockons). The latter, can be used to boost optimal range, or tracking speed (roughly means better ability to hit smaller or faster ships). Keep in mind that for tracking scripts, they usually negate one of the bonuses gained from the Tracking CPU itself. For example, the CPU may give you a bonus of 10% to optimal and 5% to tracking speed, but if you fit a tracking script into the module, it will remove the optimal range bonus and increase your current tracking bonus by 100%. (Which is why the ... kind fellow from before, pointed out that sensor boosters can boost up to 60%)
You load scripts into a sensor booster or tracking CPU the same way you load ammo, the only difference being scripts (to my knowledge) are never depleted or used up.
I have found great use for my Alumel Sensor Booster + Targetting range mod in L3s as there are quite frequently more than a handful of targeting jammers in the encounter and as long as I can still target up to or around 20-40km I am still good to go. I am fairly certain this applies to any range however, as being jammed is inconvenient and annoying at best, and dismally frustrating at worst. Try shooting down 10 elite frigs, 10 cruisers, and a handful of Battlecruisers before they approach firing range of you when four of them are constantly jamming you.
