the hummer was a purely marketing to yuppies and people who want to look like their rap idols. the Hummer for a short time was the new Escalade. but if you ask me all of today's mainstream SUVs are usless because they lack any offroad ability. Porsche for example has no point in making an SUV, i bet that thing couldnt do half the stuff my 1995 S10 pickup could offroad.

Actually the Cayenne is very capable off-road, but do you want to take something that expensive out into the mud?

Which is why I bought a Jeep Liberty.
Very practical for carrying my family of four around. Reasonably solid off-road performance should I need it. (No, I won't be traversing the Rubicon trail any time soon, but in the Buffalo NY USA area we get at least one nasty snowstorm each Winter. So you need at least 1 4x4 vehicle) With the fold-flat seats, I can easily carry as much as your standard small pickup. (Carried my Weber grill home without even removing it from the box.)
But those big fat H2 Hummers have ALWAYS been stupid. Not for any eco-freak reason, but because they look moronic. They remind me of "Baby Huey" Big fat monstrosities that can't do a damn thing off-road.
If I could afford a Hummer, I'd buy a Diesel H1. The "Classic" Hummer with a Diesel engine I can brew up Bio-Diesel for.
But, since I can't, I just lease my Liberty. Hopefully the new Blu-tec diesel engine versions will be available by the time my lease runs out in 3 years.
