For me the pirate of the year award goes to Lord Zap
He was first known for making Mallers hit for 300 hp with lasers when M0o camped Passari and Mara in the old highwayless days.

Viceroy
The best known pirate that actually uses humour to his advantage. He should at least be the most popular one, which I find quite the accomplishment tbh.
But if we go all-out including the old and gone I only think there's one candidate.

For scaring the **** out of all of eve in the time when it was still a big bad place full of atmosphere and danger.

Can't remember the name of the guy, but seemingly the first to bring in intelligent rats(scramblers,jammer, etc.). Managed to make a rep for being a sort of highway robber. Not in the uber ganking style we see today.

I nominate IckleSmash (i think thats how you spell it).
After a long and safe trip back from DSS in a shuttle I get into HED ON TOP of the gate back to Keb, about to jump past him and *BAM* Crash to desktop! Insta jumped to the gate n everything!
I reloaded to find myself in a station. I Evemailed him and even he said that it was a bit harsh! We had a very friendly and polite discussion 
 Kudos to ya ICKLESmash!
Be lucky out there all!
P.S. Not sure if he was a pirate or not as its a very "hot" part of space

Never actually met a pirate deserving praise in the field but from what I've heard you could pull any of the Jokers out of the hat and hand them some spiced wine for working for themselves and themselves alone.

Lord Zap have my vote. IIRC he was the first to fight in a BattleShip, he had the highest boundy for a long time and his face was on every billboards all over the universe (at first billboards only displayed the highest bounty).
To that he was and is the CEO of m0o, the corp who made the Dev themselved get into the game to fight them.

If this is a thread about pirate of the year, then it shouldn't go to someone simply because they are funny, or make good fraps videos, or gank the most.. but to someone who actually pirates people, and is well respected by their allies and enemies..
In which case Tank CEO or the Jokers crew would clearly be the top candidates.

beeing pirate doesn't mean that u can make great video or be forum *****...beeing great pirate is that if u are feared and have good PvP skills...there for I say Tank CEO, everyone would fear 1on1 against him....but players like Lord Zap, Lallante (CA are pirates ) and many more

well, im in a good position to have encountered most pirates in this game, hehe....
For being a great PVPer and a very respectfull player, u would have to include JEXTER, he is so much fun, and would never let u enter local without saying hi....
For sheer fear, it would have to be TANK CEO he has very high skills for his raven, and is prob the only player in the game that i would think twice before undocking after, make no mistake, he IS the best PVPER in the game...hehe.

I think there are many pirates out there that dont have the time to be forum *****s or making jokes coz they are ingame hunting people. They may not be able to kill as many as others but they are trying to kill as many as they can thats a "good pirate".

Maud Dib gets my vote, he's like the Errol Flynn of JF - Knife in his mouth, climbing the rigging and masts kinda stuff.
I've only gotten killed by Valeria (The Spang) - but there have been plenty of others that have taken my notice - and yes TankCEO, Lord Zap, Viceroy and Jexter are among them.

As for m0o, I don't think they're pirates. IIRC it was Viceroy who once said "m0o are not pirates, they're a bunch of psychotic paramilitants" on IRC, which suits them just fine 
Also, I believe it was j0rt who invented the uber stacking on Mallers...
Of the good oldtimers, Viceroy (indeed for his many funny chatlogs) and Drunkenmaster (for his many intelligent posts and general good sense of humour).
Also worthy of mention are The Gang, another band of highway robbers from way back

no m0o aren't pirates, I mean you can say your a pirate all you want but they are more like militant gurilla serial killer anarchist. They just shoot at stuff and were like the first corp to pod for fun. EVE players who like to blow up other people and call them selves pirates do that. m0o is a force, but not a pirateing force and none of thier members should be considered. Now when the best PvP corp list comes out then m0o should be considered, though I hear in Curse lately they haven't been fighting the fleets but instead are jumping lone CA with like 6 to 1 odds...and that isn't PvP thats just pushing button :/
Still that should be considered.

Setec made a huge impact in the world of piracy along with the rest of SPVD. He gets my vote.
Jexter and his band of cutthroats are also very good at their profession. Thankfully though I don't know this first hand

Im surprised anyone remembers me to be honest :). I think perhaps its hard to nominate a single person, if i had to choose a person i really wouldnt like to fight it would have to be Zap at the moment. However i was always far more frightened of leeloo, even tho i was in the same corp for some time in BETA he always managed to scare me. Atleast zap isnt completely unhinged :P. To clear a few thigns up aswell myself nor zap ever really flew mallers or used lasers we always used projectiles and a moa or thorax's.

Ok this is a very tough one...i can't decide so i will just post my own personal awards ;)
Setec - for his innovation and pure form of pirating. One of his greatest accomplishments no doubt was founding a corporation which to date still has some of the best players in EVE in it....SPVD
Viceroy - for making everyone in this community spit soda at their monitors and keyboards hundreds of times over and for his excellent, probono legal advice and defence of countless EVE pirates.
Drunkenmaster - for doing some of the best footage i have seen posted in the community created videos section on this page, for taking over the tremendous chore of being ceo to some of the most wicked badasses in EVE...SPVD
Ganja - for his uber all knowingness about things everyone else is usually in the dark about and for his uber scammerskills.
TankCEO - Respect for his skills in combat and his eternal and tireless struggle against the carebear :p
