Maybe in the form that the Amarr championship took place yes, it would be a bad idea. Afterall, that was done in the story line for the amarr succession ritual. Doing another like that for other races is impossible as they have no such traditions.
However, some form of frigate, cruiser and battleship contest might be a good idea in an inter-racial form.
Here is what I am thinking.
3 categories. Frigates (exc. elite), Cruisers and battleships. 8 contestants (or maybe teams of 2-3?), one from each of eve's bloodlines. Elimination tournement or battle royal free-for-all. Winner gets a prize from the devs.
Naturally all of this is not player run, but run by polaris or some other official body set up for role play sake like "Interstellar Gladiators" I know the name sounds rubbish but I just made it up on the spot.
And each event takes place on either a monthly basis or once every 3 months after qualification bouts or something.
Each bloodline would have their own rules for entery regarding ship types. And allowed weapons can be decided by the governing body. (eg. no rare weapons or mods so everyone has a chance.)
Frigates can be a good entrace for new players who want affordable some pvp action, cruisers for medium corps or people with more money than sence, and battleship contests for the big dog corps.
Prizes can be a hoard of rare items, new ships of the same class, (rare ones like the gold/silver mags) or just lots of cash. ------

I guess it could take the form of a race too. But if anyone can come up with more than three different ideas for competitions in eve then I would like to know.
A mining contests doesn't quite have the same lure. ------

Well perhaps something can be looked like the BattleTech version of Solaris,
A neutral place where peopel can gather and bet on 'battles' between two opponents.
Results will be a prize perhaps, and also a 'ladder' ranking for the duels.

Yup, i would love there to be an arena or two in EvE where competitions could be held.

As far as my knowleedge reaches the event team posted that they organise 5-10 events each week. But to avoid getting 300 plus players in a system those are hinted at in the scope on eve-radio, in certain channels or just a local message like `Capt ... is looking for ... `.
It s in most case a question of being in the right place at the right time.
Never been lucky enough to get into one.

Mind clash, an ingame sport that was probably supposed to have a bigger role in eve than it turned out to have. This is Mind Clash = Clicky ----------------------------------------------
