I was browsing some of the images returned from the Phoenix Lander on Mars and came across this picture.
Anyone ([exo]geologists, speak up!) out there that can explain the corrugated tubular structure seen outlined in the picture?
First thing that pops into my head is 'manmade' but I don't think parts are coming off the lander and it looks like it's part of the local geology.
Thoughts/ideas? It's been bugging me for a couple of days, what is it?

Looks like a spring. Maybe something fell off the probe? __________________________

wasn't the phoenix lander supposed to deploy probes on the soil? maybe that's part of it. ---

I was thinking more along the lines of Corrugated Plastic Tubing.

From what I understand they've only just really started getting into the science end of it (Robotic arm unpacked, testing instruments like microscopes, heaters, solar cells). I was looking at the Scientific Payload and didn't see a mention about probes. I don't recall reading/hearing about any either online/in the news.

One of two things: a piece of the lander, or the toe of something that's gonna be mighty angry to be landed on.

Aha! It's a spring from Beagle 2. There must be solar panel to the right of it.
The Mars Rover Video NASA doesn't want you to see.

Well that's peaked my interest. I'd be keen to know if that was either A.) A complete fluke and just a part of the craft. B.) A type of shell? Biggest impact to date, if Mars theorised water did have similar items. Doubt it would be made of calcium/silicates though? C.) Rock that was formed in the shape due to *gasp* the once running water on the planet, and/or wind erosion from ages past? That at least would prove that mars, like earth was not always as it is. D.) A camera fluke?
Personally I'm hoping B or C. But then again has NASA even made any further looks on this? Someone should have noticed and brought the camera to zoom in, and or have the arm deployed to retrieve it.

I was also thinking along the lines of C where wave/wind action may have caused the corrugation (think of the wavy sand at beaches or in a desert) effect on a rock.
It's the apparent tubular nature of the object that really has me curious.

I'm looking at one of the pictures and whatever it is, the lander seems to be right on top of it.
centre of picture You can see the thing, plus the two stones you can see in the other pictures
So, I think it might be either some part of the craft, or... There was intelligent life on Mars, and we've just crushed their city...

Edited by: P''uck on 07/06/2008 13:07:56 anybody remember that picture from that supposed rock that looks like a humanoid descending a dune? was posted some time ago, i think the rover took the picture.
any more info on that? i mean, itll probably nothing, but id still like a closer look at that thing...
probably the advanced cultures up there are already in contact with the nasa, and now are trying hard to find natural rocks that looks like the stuff on the photos, so they can show it to us and say:
see, we told you its just rocks
