People go on and on about cyno jammers and what not, and that plays an important role I am sure, but people usually ignore this other aspects of the game that are just as critical. I think that time zones seem to affect which order certain regions of the real world log on, and in the end that has the largest influence in the game. I think it may influence the culture of the alliance. This is the typical pattern I see during the week. I welcome other observations about log on conditions of people in alliances and time zone advantages/disadvantages they have.
1. Eastern Europe It logs on first. There are fewer people. It is harder to be a pirate/gate camper because no one is logged on yet. You can also fly anywhere. You can also stay on line into the other time zones if you stay up late, giving you extended time zone coverage allowing you to stay until a job gets done. I would expect gang culture to start out with mobilization, preparation until everyone is logged on before a fight can begin. You do not need a cloak starting out.
2. Western Europe With Eastern Europe already logged on, you need to be able to defend yourself somewhat at disadvantage, but only by a couple of hours. With the EvE population, it is more likely you are able to gate camp and pirate, but probably isn't efficient until a few hours in when all of Europe is logged on. It probably also encourages a certain type of gang culture with people expecting a bit more instant action into downtime and out of down time.
3. Atlantic Gap Not many people.
4. East Coast of N. America Europeans are still on line and are peaking when the East Coast logs on. Jita is clogged, people are everywhere. I would expect instant action and a more fragmented environment as people would log on halfway into any battle. Gate camping and ganking is easy as there are lots of people. Europeans are on their way home and are in transit, thus easier to gank. I would expect gang culture to be fragmented, always hopping into things that are already underway, smaller gangs and less focus. You need a cloak to move around. Everything is camped.
5. Central N. America Europeans are starting to log off. EvE switches over to N. Americans. People from Europe are already docked and logging off, and aren't wanting to get into fights. Gang culture here is to follow up on the days events, things are calming down. Camps are starting to break up but you still need a cloak.
6. West Coast N. America This is the last wave of possible action. Europeans are usually logged off. This is the closer time zone. At the end the camps have gone away and you can move around again. You can also start a new round of attacks.
This changes on the weekend with much larger overlap. I ignore some time zones because I don't see many people from them. The best carebear time zones are N. American Central and West Coast. The best pvp time zones are probably Eastern Europe and Western Europe. East Coast time zone decides how pvp ends and is a critical block of players. It is probably the easiest to hold space starting in Eastern Europe and Western Europe, as they can already be sieging towers for 6 hours before N. America logs on. Western N. America is probably good for holding space as well, because you can siege towers before Europeans log on and they can't maintain a long term presence in this time zone without quitting their job and playing EvE 23 hours a day. I think this situation also forces Eastern and Central N. Americans to be tower spammers and fight defensively with large forces already on top of them when they log on. In many ways, I think this is the strategic story of EvE, its understanding time zones and bringing the kinds of logistics and planning for where your time zone is.
I just had a scary thought! What if CCP nerfs Europe. I demand we change downtime to 2 hours later!

Any merit in your post is lost in the fact that you hide your main identity.
Your message would have more force if you had the confidence to stand by your own name.
Pity cause its a useful topic to discuss.

So instead of having dt from 13:00 - 14:00 local it'd be from 15:00 - 16:00 local. Still during my study/work hours.. exactly who are you nerfing? Heck make it 4 hours later so I can eat during dt and get on to camp faction rats right after, mjam.
It sux having downtime during your prime time. Seeing as for most people prime time is from 19:00 - 22:00 local, the people who have the short end of the stick now would be.. south east asia, australia maybe. Player base wise dt is at a good spot. You'd think they would have a decent reason for having it at that time after 5 years.
Also how exactly does this fit in this forum section?
All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me.. Drone guide.. |

Lets be clear, the Europe I am referring to starts at the Urals in Russia. But lets be real, the Chinese, Indians, and Pakistanis don't "bring it" and the Aussies and Kiwis are a force but not a big one so that continent is out as is Japan and the Pacific Rim. The former Soviet Republics in Asia don't bring too many players. Not much going on in Central Asia in terms of EvE. Africa is mostly absent from EvE. Some other regions also play like the Middle East, but that is all American Military Contractors and Soldiers for the most part. Also, I said N. America, that includes Canada. I don't think many Mexicans play EvE though.

The purpose of this thread is not to list every small island of players, but to explain the larger pattern. You can explain much of the way sovereignty is maintained and the way wars are fought by time zones and geography of where players come from. It takes large numbers of players to hold space. I do not mean to offend people from small countries, I am only hoping to explain what I think is a major factor in the way operations are carried out.

What if an alliance has loads of euro players (DT to 00.00) but from 00.00 to DT they suck. How can they defend/take space if there fighting some one in a totally different Time zone?

With a few rare exceptions, every time I've been in fleet in Geminate it's been entirely composed of GoonSwarm, and we're usually outnumbered. I know as a single alliance GoonSwarm has a sizable population (5115 according to eve-maps), but you're fooling yourself if you think even 1% (that's 506 people) of the alliance is involved in Geminate when we frequently face multi-alliance fleets that contained 70% more pilots.

Ergo: ....oh whats the point.....
In all seriousness, the OP is right (in terms of the effect of timezones on the game the purpose of the post was not to list each geogriphical group that plays EVE, CAODetards!) If you are a Euro player on the RSF side of the conflict you know what hes talkig about and if your a US based player on the BoB side of the confict then you definately know what the OP is talking about. I can't speak from experience for those East of GMT but I imagine there is a significant effect as well. --

I've always found it annoying that downtime is at an obscene hour of the night for us US folks. First dibs on all complexes and a free reroll on every belt in the game for faction spawns. Grumble.
I believe there is a decent number of both Australian and Singaporean EVE players. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we had a nice Japanese group somewhere too, though I haven't met them yet. |
