Here we go again. Some months ago, there was a severe shortage of lab slots, and factory slots to some extent, and CCP solved the problem by simply increasing the number of both.
Now there are once again adverts all over the forums for lab slots for sale. Personally, I can't get going as a producer because of lack of lab slots.
It is perfectly obvious that this is happening because of the fact that the number of players is increasing, and the number of players experienced enough to get into production is also increasing. I don't see that a growing economy is a problem, as long as production of everything keeps up with demand - in other words neither inflation nor deflation.
So what do we do about it?
Some suggestions:
1) the crude one - massively increase the rental for lab slots, and maybe factory ones in very popular places. If you want slots in Yulai, be prepared to pay for them - heavily!
2) Add a couple of options to the map display - "free lab slots" and "free factory slots". This won't make any more of them, but maybe it will make it possible to find them without running all over EVE to do it.
3) Make slots unlimited in some way (maybe make the lab/factory slot only display the ones you have access to, to avoid having a window with 400 entries in it). Lab slots in particular can't logically take up much more than about 50m3 of space, and have you seen the SIZE of stations?
4) connected with 3 - pay for time used dynamically. So if you don't use the facilities you don't pay. Of course, the hourly rate would probably be quite high.
EVE's economy, and the development of producing/researching characters, is currently slowly becoming crippled by the lack of facilities. Not all of us want to blow stuff up - some of us would rather make it, and it's a bit difficult to do it with no space to do it in!

I like the ideas in 2) with the F10 map showing available slots.
Another solution for this problem is to completely do away with the concept of slots and provide a terminal for both factory and laboratory usage. Players use the terminal to rent as many factories and laboratories as they desire limited by their skill levels.
In theory, this completely removes the limit on the number of factories and laboratories per station. And any player can always find a factory or laboratory on any station if the station has a terminal for either/both types of facility.
This might solve all the problems.

Another solution is to let you rent as many lab slots as your research skills allow you, plus the same for your corp. This way nobody would have 15+ lab slots, but 10 max which is more than enough.

Exactly. The number of labs slots should be trying to keep up with demand if they are to emulate a real economy.

what always kept amazing me is that we have these HUGE space stations. Capable of handeling whole fleets of battleships. I mean a Battleship has a crew of what, hundreds, thousands ? Basicaly the stations are huge cities
How is it that stations of this size only have 20 slots for rent. Man if I go on the industrial areas around where I live I see thousands of square meters of office space for rent....
