This is because they are soon to become obsolete in comparison to the next gen iPhone.

proof?
i think the touch 8gig will be dropped shortly and the 16gig touch and 32gig will be all you can buy. That will allow the price point of the 8gig 3g iphone to make some kind of sense. who would buy a 8gig touch when an 8gig iphone 3g is 100 bucks less.

This is for the next gen iPhone (the 3G iPhone). It will have real GPS, Blackberry like functionality (e.g. can synch with MS-Exchange servers now) and work on the much speedier 3G network (which is not everywhere in the US but prevalent in Europe).
However, I think people will find that nifty price comes at the cost of your cell provider contract. Apple is signing exclusive contracts with providers in different countries so you can only use the iPhone with them. Yes, it is possible to unlock the iPhone to work with others if you want to bother but, at least in the US, you lose some functionality such as visual voice mail to do so.
Apparently Apple is using these exclusive deals to help underwrite the cost of the iPhone meaning the cost will show more in your contract. Additionally looks like they will do things like charge us in the US $10/month to enable the GPS. I also suspect, with the higher 3G netowrk use, they will charge a premium on data surfing from the phone. Not likely to be cheap particularly since there is no competition.

Unfortunitely I cant provide any websites or so forth however ive seen first hand several friends damage or break their phone simply by flopping it onto a table or accidently droping the thing on the floor, things that granted you wouldnt want to do to an expensive piece of hardware but something that a phone that comes with a cell plan can easyly survive. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

It has a keyboard on the display. This is touch sensitive and not a button which you may not like. I have heard from people that it actually works pretty well although not quite as fast as actual buttons.
Guess you'd have to play with one a bit to see if you could tolerate the feel of it.

Expect the catch to be that it's tied to an 18month contract and you'll still pay through the nose if you want one thats sim unlocked if you don't want a provider with sub par data connections and rates.

In the UK O2 will actually give you a new iphone for ú45 a month with no cost for the handset. Which is about $1,054 a year for service. Not cheap, but under $100.

Aparently the only reason they are dropping the cost is that they are upping the minimum monthly subscription fee from 60 to 70 dollars aparently....
Adding a 240 bump to your 2 year contract.
Thus, not a drop in price but a raise.
I didn't realize how ********ly expensive the iphone was till i started researching it recently.
Of course, I havn't paid my real phone bill ($225 usd) and my pay as you go phone doesn't have minutes on it either..
I'm a pretty good indicator of whats worth paying for. I mean you see I'm still subscribed to eve, even when I cant pay my phone bill. woot! |

Thought about the iPhone, but am very happy with my phone and PDA setup. I have a phone that's 3G, smaller than an iPhone, isn't locked to any network and can be used to let me hook my laptop or PDA up to the Internet at 3G speeds. And my PDA has a full-size keyboard and an SSH client. Okay, not quite good enough to change my Eve skills while on the road, but very cool nonetheless.
Glad that the iPhone has matured though. Could become a great platform if they iron a few of it's problems out.

Nah, I think people go overboard on owning the latest gadgets too. Those fancy phones are just over priced toys. No one really needs them. People also get stupid about it too by going into debt and ruining their credit when they can't pay their bills. |
