Well, I finally got myself a cruiser (Thorax) after hauling tons of garbage and falling asleep on an Iteron's only miner II, mining Veldspar for full lonely nights... Now, I want to mine better stuff but I keep being annoyed by pirates. Since I want to keep 4 miners active what electronic warfare can I equip my ship to prevent pirates from targeting me for instance so that I can keep mining at least long enough to fill a secure container without shooting 7 Guristas down? What kind of targeting system do pirates have? Other tips that might help me? What about combat drones? Are they as good as regular weapons or missiles? I think I only killed one Pirate by accident once... Hey, I'm a miner, not a fighter! :-)

well your only option really is to train for scout drones , thorax drone bay holds a fair few hammerheads ,any frigs that bother you will be ripped up in no time they should help you stay in 0.6 space ,, then you can use your 5 mining lazers

Only 4 miner2's? Drop whatever from your low slots. You can get co-cpu's in all of them and run 5 miner2's. Or get Co-CPU2's and have 1 low slot for something else.
You said you had an indy, mine to a can, then pick it up later.
To keep priates at bay, use drones. When I used a Thorax, I'd mine in 1-.5 space with 1 heavy drone and the rest miners. 1 heavy will take care of packs of whimpy priates. Before heavys, I think I kept 2 or 3 hammerheads and the rest miners.
No amount of EW (Electronic Warfare) will keep the rats off you, at best they will prolong them attacking you slightly.
Drones will help you mine quicker, and are excellent for killing rats. They have limited uses in PvP.
Drones are your freinds, I name mine.

Use drones. I'm not sure if it's possible to target jam npc rats. In any case, jammers are mid-slot items and the Thorax has precious few mid slots.

Hey, thanks guys. I'll try the scout drones. I guess I'll have to go to school though, you need 1 scout drone level per drone you want to control!!! I guess my drone bay is too big for my education :-)

Yes, drones are the way to go. ESPECIALLY in a thorax.
I run all 5 miner 2's ( possible with CPU's in the low slots ) and just fill the bay with Ogres. ( hammerheads if you cant use heavy drones yet )
Will trash anything down to .3 pirates.

5 Miner II's is a must in a Thorax, its the only way to fly!
I mine regular in a 0.3 and 0.4 with 8 Ogre 1's watching over me. This works well as long as you dig yourself in between a bunch of roids, that way any missiles that get targetted at you hit the roids. I then wait until the rats are about 20k and unleash hell!
Eight Ogre's .... watch the rat droppings appear ;-) Oh btw, these refine down to some good stuff too!

P.S Ogre's are heavy drones so you may need to work on your skills.

2 hammerheads + 2 infiltrators will handle anything up to 0.4 space.

Hammerheads are great, but unfortunately they are weak against some Serpentis in 0.6 systems. So you should use a mix, I recommend Hornet, they are cheap and it is a good idea to mix them with hammerheads.
Later with heavy drones do the same, mix the drones types, you will notice it is more efficient this way. Unless you know exactly what you are fighting, and why you use this kind of drone but then you don't need advice from me,  .
