Sorry in advance if I'm beating a dead horse with a stick but I was wondering as EVE is the only game I have or know of that does not have AA.
What's the reason behind this? Was it forgotten in the development then left too late to go back and add support or was it left out for a reason?
Are there plan's to add it? As I said all games I know of have an option in game to turn it on to 2x at least. As we are paying customers it seems only sensible to ask about it.

AFAIK, eve uses your graphics card defaults for those types of settings. So whatever level of anti-aliasing you enable within the drivers, should be applied to Eve. |

nTune has a global default of 4x AA on my PC. EVE still has no in game AA and I know no one on TS or in the Alliance that has it either. --------------------

From Memory (may not be the only reason).
There is an issue with the way AA and HDR interact that causes problems in DirectX.
I will get a confirmation on that if you want.

Its a very complicated issue if you want to get into the technical details, but you're correct - its a rendering issue (or more precisely, how current programming applies HDR in the rendering passes).
There are ways to force it, but you do get a nasty performance hit at present in all methods I know of (Fill me in though if you know of anything new )

They've already pretty much hit it on the head, but basically if you want AA in EVE, you'll have to disable HDR (premium graphics setting) and then manually adjust AA on your video card / onboard video to what you want it to be.
Your 4x default might kick in automatically, but a lot of times (especially with nvidia cards) the AA setting is set to defer to the application's preference rather than forcing AA on.
It sucks not having HDR and AA at the same time, but on DX9 it's just a fact of life. |

Edited by: MJ Maverick on 12/06/2008 18:52:01 Thanks, I'm on a 7950GT runs CoD4 on full seamlessly but I get no AA even with HDR turned off, which is how I always have it.
I was just wondering why they dont have an option to have say:
Attempt AA & HDR [On/Off] [Select AA setting]
AA [Off/2x/4x/8x]
HDR [None/Low/High]
Note: 'Attempt AA & HDR' would try it in case you have your driver forcing it and it works like some people have using nHancer. But by default of course it wouldn't apply AA & HDR at the same time.
Edit: Obviously the options I suggested would be formatted like a HTML option menu so you can only choose one of the three at a time. --------------------

*Bump*
Are there any plans to bring it in? There are lot's of games such as Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and Need for Speed that utilise both AA and HDR bloom effects so we know it's possible.

That enabling both has performance impact due to teh way DirectX9 chooses to process the rending. If this is fixed then we will look again at teh problem.

No one ever said it wasn't being implemented due to performance hits. It isn't implemented because of rendering problems yes.
Sorry I don't see the logic behind this decision. Does that mean all games should cut out AA? Of course it's going to have a hit, just like enabling premium is. But do you cut out premium? Of course not. It's a choice, it is in every game. I have never encountered or even heard of a gmae that forces you to have it.
Surly there is another reason why it won't be implemented... If it wont.

When they say "performance hit", they mean: It absolutely rapes your system and drops your FPS to 10% of what it can do. As such, there is no point in wasting time on its implementation, since it will render the game plain unsuable for anyone who tries it.

You need dx 10 support or a monster pc for aa and HDR to work together.
So far the only game's who have managed to do that are Half life 2 and crysis.

Edited by: Dmian on 28/06/2008 00:22:16 Sorry, just a dumb question: is HDR added to a space game a dramatic change? From what I've seen, HDR works great for games "on Earth", improving the light/shadow balance. Will it really make that big of a difference on Eve? Or will HDR be used for other effects other than dramatic light/shadows? I've seen a lot of examples about HDR, but none of them were about spaceships. Most were jungles, objects, buildings interiors, etc. If someone is using it I'd like to hear about your experiences.
I'll be happy with only AA, really...
Edit: BTW, there are two other HDR and/or AA threads right now on the forums: Anti-Aliasing No AA or HDR... Did I miss something? nVidia or AMD releasing new graphic cards with extensive HDR capabilities or similar? ----

Yes. Especially when flying Amarr.

A bit contradictory there? Half Life 2 runs fine with both AA and HDR on DX 9 with a mediocre PC. I have also had Crysis using both on DX 9 with the very same PC. Performance hit? Not from my experience.

Half lfie 2 uses another hdr system than most games do now.
I dunno how they did it but indeed they did succeed with implanting hdr with aa with relavtovely low needs.
The hdr in half life 2 isn't that good tough. |

In my game-development experience, i've always had trouble with AA and HDR, in many cases, one or the other refused to work.

Can't we have AA while disabling HDR?
