Unless something drastic happens to make 64-bit Vista not suck so much I plan on migrating over to the Mac platform early next year - I've seen some demos and I must say it looks pretty nice, despite the hardware lock-in and lack of software availability (which seems to improving greatly).
How well does Eve run on Mac? I know there's a Mac classic client but no Premium still. Thanks!

Well, if you're willing to learn a whole new system you might as well try linux, too. It's free, so, even if you don't end up using it, you lose nothing except maybe a CD-R and a couple hours or so. You can run premium graphics with wine and a GeForce 8xxx series card (ATI has bad linux drivers, and there is a problem with the GeForce 7xxx series).
I don't want to see this thread turn into an argument about OS's either, I just want to inform the OP about their options.

I can run two clients at the same time +teamspeak + youtube, so all is good! Been in many fleet fights with my Macbook pro. |

Ever since they fixed the issues that led to all the constant crashing, the client runs like a charm on my MacBook pro.
Still kind of annoyed by the absence of premium and very little recent correspondence from the devs, though. -_- |

Edited by: Dr Sheepbringer on 12/06/2008 07:34:57 It's funny how they have Apple related articles about Even on the front page, but that's where it ends. They are selling Eve as the ultimate game and it's "perfect" when in truth the client feels like a beta version.
a) it's old (classic) b) buggy c) slow (performance, hellou!) d) crashes, crashes and more crashing...(just in the middle of battle)
My account is running out in a few days and I need to buy more gametime, but seeing as my gaming experience is nowhere close to a windows user...I'm not sure if i want to pay it. I might sound like a **** in these post I've made about the mac-client, but I also believe we have the right to actually demand a response. CCP Casqade is the only one who has been active with us and I truly believe he is doing all he can. For example, he tells us the EA patch notes for macs is ready and has been forwarded to the correct team. Still...no patch notes to be seen anywhere.
When i saw the Apple article on the front page the first thing that came into my mind was "hypocritcs!". So, what's going on now? |

At this time if you want to play EvE in decent way you just have to play it in Windows. The Eve team don't know how to code on other plateform and use a virtualisation solution. It's buggy, it doesn't handle today video technology and it's cpu consumming. THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION. Buy a win/pc, this is the answer of dev team if you ask them how to make EvE running well now. Bad... These guys may have a black hole in front of their eyes when they are thinking of how blizzard can maintain an mmo on Mac plateform with both intel and Powerpc CPU in the same time of windows version and with the same features... Just can't wait to see Starcraft 2 on shelves. I know, I know, this is not a mmo but it will be a really good SCIFI game on Pc AND Mac... |

To the poster above me: I'm on a MacBookPro and can use two accounts, youtube, and itunes, all at once on the Mac client. While maintaining stability... so it is possible to play the game well with the Mac client.

The Eve client works, for the most part. Certainly playable. There's some graphical glitches, some are annoying like the discobox and others are showstoppers such as the solar system map not working at all. There is also an apparent memory leak that becomes untenable after a few hundred jumps but unnoticeable for average play.
The most annoying thing i've found is the necessity to log out of osx and back in after the bugs do take down the client. That, and CCP's unwillingness to even acknowledge the mac client's existence after marketing it so hard to us. |

Unless you absolutely want to run Premium, there's nothing wrong with the mac client... At least not for me, even in larger fights.
There used to be some really annoying crashes early on, but it's been stable for me since. YMMV

So to sum it all up: - EVE works on a Mac, either through bootcamp, or emulated with cider. - There will never be a stand alone Mac client, simply forget that. - No Premium graphics, yet, but we are promised an blog next week about that, they have it working but it needs some work/ testing. - EVE will crash at some point, like after a few hours of play. - The only way to stop the crashes coming after the first is to logout of the OS. - Emulated, you'll have FPS between 15-50. - Eve voice may work or not. No idea why or how some got it to work. - No EFT, no EveMon. - Some drivers for certain graphics cards are giving trouble with Eve, like those for the nVidia 8800.
But other then the above its the most addictive game I've EVEr played.

On a iMac with the 2.0Ghz dual-core Intel that came out in Jan of '06. Have 2Gb of RAM installed and Eve runs great for the most part. The only problem I get is that after playing for about 2hrs the game has 2sec lockups about every minute or so. Restarting the computer seems to fix it.

I've been running on a MacBook Pro since the Mac client was released. For the most part I seem to have fewer issues than the Windows based pilots I work with.
I use Eve voice some with no troubles using a USB headset. Someone mentioned the solar system map not working for the but it works fine for me. As I do exploration that is critical.
There are some login and stability issues if I haven't rebooted after a lengthy Eve session but that has always cleared it up.

Dr. Sheepbringer, reading from your post and other grievances around these forums, you seem to have allot more problem than the average Mac user. What Mac machine are you running the game on?
One of my corp mates is running the game in classic mode on windoze machine because his computer cannot run premium. Still he is experiencing more crashes than i am doing on my mac. I would say the game is quite stable.
And btw.. what kind of doctor are you ?!

I personally only suffer from the "everything went black and then crashes multiple times before rebooting", but those things stated are pretty much the problems the mac users are having. The thing that scares me the most is that there seems to be many different kinds of bugs that some have, some don't. Doesn't seem to be a clear reason for it. On windows it's another matter due to much more variations in hardware and such. Mac are a closed system with relatively small numbers of different variations.
And as for doctor. I'm a sheepbringing doctor ;) Lambs for the slaughter...

Dr. lamb for the slaughter....can you bring me some Haggish (the scottish sausage) I think you need to tell us what kind of system you are running the game on so we can rule of any macbooks (that are not compatible for the game) and see what kind of hardware is causing your problem.

I run Eve on a MacBookPro, and it's a real pain in the ass. I ALWAYS get a virtual cube around my ship made of pixels, that starts blinking after a few jumps and that just make my eyes bleed until it finally disapears after between a few jumps and when i can't stand it anymore and restart my computer. I tried many combinations of graphical preferences, and it changes absolutely nothing, i always get the same problems, the same lag/freeze/client quitting by itself thing, so i'm just switching to windows client. It's a shame when you know that i can run WoW with highest graphics, and i can record while in raid, without ever getting a single fps drop. I know it's not something you can really compare as it's just emulation Vs. OpenGL, but anyway it's sad to see things acting much more worse on a 2003 game then on a 2005 one.

Hi fellow Mac users
I run EVE on a Mac Pro and on a Mac Mini and I have little to complain so far. On the Mini, there's the solar system background occasionally missing and the stations are transparent... but this fixers itself after some time. On the Mac Pro (ATI X1900XT), I have no complaints whatsoever (except that I have to bootcamp to win for premium content ).
Cheers!

Edited by: Kaber Jost on 27/06/2008 02:15:21 I usually use my Windows machine to run Eve but use my Macbook or Mac Mini for changing skills/chatting. In my opinion the Mac client is rather terrible and rather annoyed with the excuses and compatibility problems. I can load up WoW and it runs great on the Macbook but Eve is 'not compatible'.
Mediocre implementation at best, feels like an afterthought and performs like an afterthought.

You can't really compare WoW and Eve on the mac, because WoW has a native client (done for mac) and Eve has a bubblegum/ductape client (wrap around)

But surely that is the whole point ... There is no Mac/Linux client it's just a prepackaged version of what a few people have been doing manually for some time - running it under emulation. The problems we see, graphical glitches/crashes/low fps, are almost completely due to the emulation layer rather than the client.

Duh. WoW was started as a cross-platform product. No dependence on DirectX, or at least it was planned for that DirectX wouldn't be the only display driver. EVE was conceived as PC-only, so there's a lot of Windows hardcoded stuff in there.

I switched to an imac (at home) about 2 months ago after having used windows for years, it is pretty easy to get used to and everything works fine. In my experience (I work in IT for a company that uses all 3 platform) when you have a problem it takes the longest to fix it on linux followd by windows and I am yet to have any real problem (or hear about one) with mac. I could just be lucky but it seams to me like mac is the better platform of the 3. ____________________________________________________ Reality is for those who have no imagination. |

It's very simple. Mac OS > Windows in everything BUT gaming. For gaming you still want to use Windows (preferably XP). Other than that Macs are great.
Mac OS X EVE client has a terrible performance. (5x slower than native Windows client).

Thanks for the opinions.
I'm definitely getting a mac laptop for sure. Honestly, the only thing holding me from switching my desktop over is Eve, if it doesn't run well I'll probably hold on to my current Windows box for a bit longer, maybe throw in a new video card, 'bout all it needs to stay current.
I could talk all day about all the issues I've had with Vista and why I refuse to give MS any more money, but that's really beyond the scope of this thread...

Well you can try it and if you don't like it, pick up your Windows install disks and create a Bootcamp(Windows) partition. It isn't the most elegant solution but it exists. Ever since Apple struck a deal with Intel and moved to x86 chip set, getting a Mac doesn't back you into a corner if you're switching from Windows to OSX.
