Whilst hunting for jobs, the credit crunch in full swing and some general boredom on my end, I have decided to try something *reaches for thesaurus* con-stuc-tive.
In essence, I am going to try my hand at building some wind turbines for my house and some way of getting the power evened out with demand changing through the day. I have tried a few small scale exeriments but nothing like this. so the learning curve will be uphill but thankfully not vertical. I am putting this on the forum as I know there are a few enginearing people that may/may not have a few pennies worth to throw at the idea. I also plan on doing this every year but forget, I hope that since it is on the forums I practicly live on I will not forget
Parameters I am aiming for No consumables Cheap Low maintanance Around 5kW peak output
Naturaly my home city being Edinburgh, solar power is thrown straight out the window and wind power comes in. I have gotten a few old bikes, should be able to use some of that for frames and gears. Shouldnt be too hard to lay my hands on a few magnetic coils for the generators. The size of the blade I am thinking of a radius of 60cm to be mounted on a roof in clusters. Power storage has a few options. Pumped storage, excess power pumping water up to a tank on the roof then let it drain when power is needed. Will be skipping this due to the weight of the tank and water on the building. I'm thinking about electrolysis of water and store the hydrogen, rig it up to a hydrogen fuel cell and store power that way. I have no idea how to make a fuel cell or if it is even possible in an amateurs workshop, but it should be interesting.
Of course I could always just plug the array into the power grid and offset the bills that way.... but wheres the fun in that

Good luck if you succeed. I think there are a fair few online tutorials about building your own wind turbine from scratch so there is help out there.

If we had a sensible policy like Germany's, where homeowners are guaranteed a premium price when they sell energy back to the grid, I'd do that. Electricity prices are indexed to the price of oil, so this is likely to be quite a good investment. My research services Mineral compression for carrier/Rorqual pilots |

Is planning permission ok? I know round where I live in the South of England, the council would probably have kittens if I tried to put wind turbines on my roof... ------

Yea will need to look at this, in Edinburgh it is if you can not see it then its no problem. Living in a tenement flat, so the roof is shaped like \_/ the other way up. Will be building them where they cannot be seen from there.

I'd love to have wind turbines for my house. Since I live in Wales, up the side of a hill in Cardiff, solar is pretty much out (unless Global Warming goes ahead, because we probably would benefit from it!) so wind is pretty good. |

Check out the Vertical axis wind turbine designs. They are considered to be less intrusive and you might have a better chance getting one built without irritating your neighbors.
