Howdy,
I was wondering if anyone here uses Dual Monitors and has it working with in EVE?
I'm working on a space flight simulator and wanted to pose this question. I can't decide if I want one big monitor, or two dual monitors.
At the moment I'm toying with the idea of having dual widescreens on top of one another to create a larger display area vertically whilst keeping the horizontal (so it can fit through a door) shorter.

A mere 9 monitors? I'm running 34 monitors!*

Pfft...I have a Jumbotron which I can partition into as many screens as I need.

Edited by: Qanael Radlari on 12/06/2008 21:07:57 I'm not entirely sure, but I think most single-display games (i.e. that have no built-in feature to send part of the display to another monitor, a la Supreme Commander) suffer greatly when their view is spanned over multiple monitors. EVE is a single-display game as far as I know.

Your computer is set up in your door?
In reality I'm a 3 monitor but I'm I'm also a 3 computer. 1 to play eve, 1 to surf the web, 1 to log into other applications.

A long time ago EVE had dual monitor support, but it caused a lot more game-stopping problems than it was worth. Reinstating this is on our huge, extensive, massive, just plain long wishlist of things we want to do.
Right now the only dual screen thing people manage to do is stretch the display across two screens by setting a custom resolution in their drivers and getting EVE to use that. Usually horizontally, which means you end up with two halves of the HUD on either monitor. Personally that would annoy the living daylights out of me.
I haven't seen anyone stretch it vertically though...probably because to do this you would need a more intricate monitor mounting. Which is what you are building, so it would be worth a shot. I'd figure thing like the neocom and station services would still have all functional elements on one monitor, probably the top one. You can of course move the in-space UI elements to wherever you need them.
Not sure how having two really wide monitor bezels breaking up the image would feel though...as stated, I find even just the vertical split irritating...having a long horizontal split would be even more intrusive.

Yeah imagine always having half the ship on one monitor, half on the other. -- Banned since 2005, back by popular demand! They said it wouldn't happen!! |

They're not, but video cards that can offer decent performance, with similar settings, over triple the display area are. |

that AWSOME!!! monitor was in fact 4 monitors in 1 unit, if you look closely you will see the near invisible edges of the connecting screens.
iWooT !!!!
there are external adaptors that will allow you to split a vga/dvi output across x3 1024x768 screens (on custom screen size)
There are pics out there of EVE running on it, your just gonna need a damn powerfull graphics card to get it to run smooth on that resolution with all the bells and whistles turned up. (multi-SLi/crossfire with Physix) on a 4Ghz+ board.

I used to have three monitors and could feel the light from them drying my eyes out, I wonder if that guy has the feeling of sandpaper for eyes.... -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Can anyone explain to me how it's possible to have more than 2 independent monitors from a single graphics card? __________________________

I like his strapped on joystick. Personally I've always wanted to try a setup like that for a flight sim. Or do 2 set ups and go toe to toe with a friend in a WW2 flight sim or a mechwarrior.

I asked my tech friend once, he said something about a custom driver though that would void its warrenty. There are cards that have the ports for more than two monitors that cost both your arms and genitalia though. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Edited by: Effigial on 13/06/2008 17:28:31 By far the cheapest way is to buy a piece of software called Maxivista, this enables you to expand your display over your network connection onto another computer.
I have a midspec laptop here with the wireless disabled so as not to interfere with my internet (I'm in the country and only get a 512kb line) linked onto my PC with a crossover cable. I now have 4 monitors for not alot of money (2nd monitor on the laptop also)

I once had five monitors on one. My wife called it the command center.
The trick is to have more than one video card. Once you've got that, Win XP and, I think Macs do it pretty easily. And, of course, I'm sure there's a way to do it with Linux.
Three monitors would be the way to go with Eve, certainly. |

Thanks Whisper for the input. I am concerned about the vertical split as well might get a tad annoying to be honest. At the moment I'll probably just go with single monitor and perhaps design it so that I can modify it a little bit later.
One thing that I would love to see with EVE is the ability to Output information. Example being a lot of flight sims use I/O cards to have in game data displayed on LCD panels, flip switches, turn on lights, etc.
Would love to be able to setup EVE to turn on a Red LED light in the*****pit when someone has targeted me.
Other systems I'm looking at will let me create input devices from various switches, pots, and buttons. So I will at least have the ability to push a button and map it whatever key combo I want.
Thanks everyone for thier input on this it is very helpful. I wonder what 3 vertical monitors would be like. hah. |
