It doesn't matter how much hardware or network stuff they fling around when the main bottleneck is in the ****ty game code. |

Ok I know everyone is pis*ed off that we've got a 2h downtime (again) but what I'm *actually* looking for is a couple more facts to add to the list. ****y game code isn't the main problem, though it possibly contributes. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

Thanks mate, was trying to remember when they deployed the third SSD.
Does anyone have any info on the cluster from Fanfest? "Eve is more filling than roast steaks slowly grilling over a rotating fire whilst marinating in a combination of Australian fruity wines and the best imported herbs..." - SChimera [16.4.07] |

Well, there is your problem
There is a reason nobody uses MS SQL Server in their mission critical databases. Oracle, maybe DB2.

Depending on what you're doing, SQL Server can be just peachy. Also, license negotiations don't go like this, like they do with Oracle:
DBA: We're going to need some licenses. How much do you charge? Oracle: Before we talk price, how much money do you have?

QFT.
Don't be a sheep and hate MSSQL just because it's a Microsoft product.

As far as I understand, they are working to upgrade the cluster with new yarrrdware during 2008 for the third time, incorporating Infiniband.
Yarrrrdware Upgrade Summary
[list=1][June 2008 - Ongoing] Infiniband Internal Test Cluster is live, development ongoing [June 2008 - Ongoing] Cisco virtualisation project underway (speeds up EVE-Online.com) ...
I'd rather read:
* Multi-threaded SOL servers in testing, development ongoing
* Item Database updating project underway (makes EVE-Online.com less obsolete/useless)

Edited by: Hugh Ruka on 13/06/2008 20:07:25 I am no DB expert, but the things CCP is inventing already exist for at least a decade and are slowly being obsoleted.
Memory channel architecture on Alpha servers coupled with TruCluster did exactly what CCP is trying to do with Infiniband and custom code. Just it was application transparent.
No matter how good they work on custom code, the bottleneck will still be MS SQL as the backend and Windows as such. There are no Enterprise features in Windows to speak about.
There are already SSI solutions working on Linux and other OSs (f.e. MOSIX). They can even work over Ethernet (nobody says TCP, using TCP for cluster comms is stupidity in the case of SSI systems). CCP are simply patching Windows deficiencies via HW upgrades.
However it will be fun to see their SSI implementation actualy work.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and a more functional client UI would be handy. |

"Reading through the forums there seems to be this common illusion that fixing things is usually just doing a single thing. That's simply wishful thinking at best, there is no "Fix" button any more than there is an "I Win" button." - Oveur
Just a reminder that the purpose of this thread is to collect all the information and statistics of CCP's cluster technology.
There are plenty of other threads that slag off MS, no need to cross post.
But do let me know if I've missed any technology upgrade news and I'll add it to the list! "Eve is more filling than roast steaks slowly grilling over a rotating fire whilst marinating in a combination of Australian fruity wines and the best imported herbs..." - SChimera [16.4.07] |
