I'm a PvP guy. At least in every other MMO I've ever played I was. Not here.
I spent my first 2 months in-game learning how to play, and the other 4 months trying to learn how to fight.
I joined an elite high-sec mercenary outfit, where I learned that on my best day I couldn't even dent my corp-mate's tanks. I spent most of the time listening to them engaging in a complex cat-and-mouse type of combat that I barely understood, while safely out of the fight (to prevent an unfavorable kill/loss ratio for the corp).
I left, thinking that the only way to learn to fight would be to jump in the deep end. I joined up with a 0.0 corp and prepared to make the dangerous run out to null-sec, and had the dubious pleasure of listening in while they got kicked the $%@# out of their systems by the Red Alliance and retreated back to high-sec. I was then treated to the blamestorming and political asshattery that ensued.
I left, and spent my days building solo birds on EFT, studying the forums and running endless missions. I attempted a bit of solo piracy, and was blown the hell out of space because after all this time, I still didn't have the first idea how to really fight.
I joined the Caldari State Militia three days ago. Last night I popped my cherry and laid my first "final blow".
I've learned the difference between a good FC and a bad one, what the "nano scourge" really means, and I've learned not to rush out ahead of the fleet with my fangs out.
I've learned more about fitting a ship in three days than I learned in months reading forum warrior posts. I've learned how to play my overview, and not let it play me.
I've seen small unit combat, blob warfare and everything in-between. I've seen low-sec pirates picking off the stragglers and the foolish in big fleets, and participated when our FC decided he'd had enough of that crap and turned the guns of the militia on the pirate fleet (obliterating them).
I've watched in admiration as small bands of Gallente nano-destroyers made slashing runs on the outer edges of a huge Caldari fleet, drawing out the interceptors and the noobs and killing three times their own weight in the running battles that ensued.
I got the distinct thrill of knowing that I was valuable to the war effort, as my Ferox's railguns (as well as those of a Rokh pilot in my fleet) reached out to 120k and convinced the Gallente to change their tactics (with extreme prejudice)
I've learned so much more, but to keep it reasonably short I've learned more in three days in the Militia than I learned in 4 months outside of it.
Thank you for this expansion. I couldn't be happier with this game.

I've always expected the FW to bring this kind of feedback.
It's just too sad we get a lot more moaning and winging from the older players than we get the positive responses from the newer. That doesn't mean the positive expereinces aren't there just that it goes unsaid more often.

5 years this August 1 and I am enjoying it more and more. Sure 0.0 culture has its addictive vices and but there is something about FW that allows you to recatpture the fun that can also be funneled out of the game with 0.0 goes into masochist mode.
When the newer players dig into their factions RP ( or not who cares if they do ) and start getting better then I think you'll see the new players turn into hardcore PVPers and that only serves all of EVE's players.

Speaking for myself...the older players forget that this is a larger game with a larger audience than when we first started. CCP has a lot broader base to appease and "MY VISION OF THE GAME!" (whomever "me/my" may be) means a lot less with 250k subscriptions than with, say 20k.
Or, put shorter, we don't try to whine as such, we just forget our individual opinion counts for less these days than what it did when we started. |

I fully endorse Reaver One's points. Except, in my case it's been more like two years. |

Thank every player who has whined about the pvp in this game being 99% time spent trying to find someone to fight, and then 1% of the time actually fighting.
I knew Faction Warfare would be very popular if implemented in a good way. Now they just need to put in rewards. People will get tired of spending lots of money and getting killed all the time for nothing. :)
Having ranks and medals is very important because it gives the very important feeling of virtual accomplishment. But I dont think it will be enough reward for long in itself.

Excellent OP
This illustrates something that has been said many times though: SO much depends on joining a good corp.
I am very thankful that all the corps I have been in so far have been good ones.
I'd say that at least half of the "I quit" threads are in effect "I couldn't find a good corp". |

I can't even tell you how much I can echo this post. ESPECIALLY the part about 99% of looking for a fight, and the intricate games of cat and mouse that I barely understood. Joined up with the Minmatar militia last night, and had more fun on this game than I've had since I started a few months ago.
Point being, great job CCP, keep up the Faction Warfare support! |

I am being absolutely sincere when I say this...
Faction warfare delivered everything it promised and has achieved all of the goals it was intended to. Fleet PvP is now accessible to everyone, the consequences are no less real and the fights no less awesome. Although there are still some issues to address, this patch has been 100% successful in achieving its primary goals. |

One thing that's funny to me right now is the historical similarities between FW militia and Stalin's conscript "quantity has a quality all its own" armies. Somebody sneered about our T1 cruisers all huddled together at the stargate against the nano-gangs, and sure, that was happening. But when the blob rumbled onward, it crushed what it struck. With an awesome rumbling thud.
I suspect that FW tactics for the near future are going to center around that central blob of individually-weak zerglings, used as a hammer or sometimes as an anvil, while more specialized gangs get formed up (as the FC learns who he has and what they can do) to give the FC better eyes and greater capacity to deal with multiple and unique threats. |

I love posts like this, one of the best things about RvB for me was the amount of people who thanked me for getting them into PvP when all they'd done was missioning, they hadn't seen an avenue into PvP before that.
I had a smile yesterday too when I saw how many of the top ten damage dealers on one of the RA carrier kills were ex RvBers.
It seems like "official" faction warfare is having the same effect, and that, is a very good thing.

Great post.
I'd dabbled in PVP before - an agony unleashed class, lurking around low-sec - but being able to get right into the fight and have fun is fantastic. |

Excellent post reaver and I can echo most of your sentiment, even with a differing EVE history :)
I have really come to enjoy pvp, be it blob, or as I had tonight, small gang stuff out in Black rise and Placid. Great fun and a chance to learn a new set of tactics :D
FW for me is a success, and meets all the goals I had hoped it would. Hell when I did get killed tonight, it was in a small ship with some 20million isk of gear on it, and I'm still happy about the night overall (also got my first "killing blow" :D) -------

FW wil work until soem people start to spoil and #!@#!@! it. You know that ideas are less important thatn the people on them. When someoen discover a way to use FW to make #!@!@ etc... then wil start to deteriorate.
We can only hope ccpo wil be fast enough to counter when this happens. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

I've been guilty of that. Usually while three sheets into the wind.
I give them grief for making a few truly boneheaded decisions in the past, but CCP does seem to have hit a grandslam with this one. I plan to join the chaos myself in another week.
