I would like a overview setting that shows only people I can legally shoot at (criminals, war targets, and hostile militia). I've fiddled with it a bit and cannot get it to work.
It seems war target condition is overridden by standing and security status. So when I remove neutral standing everything disappears.
Any help? |

Yeah it's crap.
How you have to go about doing it is being sure that you set the war targets to a certain standing first. This works with war targets, but I don't know if you can get it to work with Militia, because it is tied into standings.

When I go to set standings, it asks to search for person, corporation or alliance. I'm not sure how to get militia to show up. |

You have to keep the neutral status checked.
However, you can create a war target only overview. Not that only war targets will show, but only war targets will have color tags and color backgrounds.
Open up your overview and go to states, uncheck those you don't wish to see. ie..high standing, alliance, corp..etc..this way they will hve no color tag.
Then go to the appearance tag. Make sure only -5 or lower status, and pilot are at war, are checked. you can also set them to blinky. I think you cna do the same for militia but..haven't checked that.
Now, when you look at your overview, and local for that matter, the only characters you see who will be more than just empty brackets, will be those you can legally shoot.
I use this all the time and it's a real handy way to keep alert at all time. Of course, it doesn't mean you can't get caught off guard. Nothing to say a neutral or high standing person won't take a pot shot at you.

Whole point of this is to not accidentally click on a neutral in the heat of battle when the overview has items moving up and down and the game is lagging for reasons only the game knows. I have played with this in the past as far as setting everyone to bad standings, setting gates to bad standings, and removing neutrals. I don't see how I can do that with faction warfare.
I can carefully click and choose when cruising around but when I'm in the thick of it I'd rather ctrl click spam, shoot first, and ask questions later.

When working in a fleet, set your overview to aphabetical rather then distance. It helps in 2 ways, you can find called targets much faster, and the overview won't jump around while you're trying to target.

Basically, you cant. And here is the reason why.

Without getting distracted by my pvp ability or lack thereof, I'm just asking if anyone knows an actual setting in game that only shows valid targets including war targets, including global criminal, including -5 security status, and militia war targets.
I appreciate the other advice about pvp but the above question is what I'm concerned about.

Set your own faction to positive standings. This will remove all the corps who have joined your militia from the overview. |

I think that would work to make a neutral / hostile overview. Problem I keep running into is being able to remove positive and neutral without removing the hostile.
For some reason neutral is "higher up" in the list overriding most of the suggestions put forth.

You used to be able to. The patch before Empyrean Age, or maybe two patches before, I had one that worked perfectly. I only had war targets and lower than -5.0 checked. Did not have neutrals checked. And it showed war targets perfectly.
Then I found out they changed something the day my corp mates were yelling at me while being main tackle, "There he is! Get him pointed!" I looked at my overview and saw nothing at all. Then I switched to my normal traveling overview and saw him but the overview jumped and I targeted a neutral instead. The WT got away because they nerfed the overview.
Also, setting the war corp/alliance to negative is fine, but we also have people negative that we're not at war with. I don't want ANYONE other than war targets or global criminals to show up. |

Overview is majorly bugged all around, and has been for a while. One of the reasons I joined FW is because when I looked at in on SiSi I didn't have the overview problems I have on TQ, so I assume now it is a server load thing.
Just yesterday, I had a player pirate in a complex with me, showing up as a rat. I saw him shooting my pod as I tried to figure out how the rats had broken my tank with ease, and he had a big fat red rat + on him as he passed me by, like the three rats orbiting me.

Overview is crap and odviously designed by morons or partial ******s. After playing this game for over the last year they did however make one incredible improvement -the align button. Whoever made this new feature should work on similar projects and fire the rest of the ******s that throw in more fluff, bugs and lag instead of making a better game. Its sad to see how they don't get it. I suggest a corp meeting amongst CCP that should include a 2 minute lecture on KISS method.

Yup, Align To is the best button added in recent memory, but they did drop the ball a bit. You can't right click on a bookmark and align to those.
I'm not complaining about the Align feature, mind you, but they did not get it 100% right. |

You'll have to wait until CCP fixes this borked POS of an overview function.

Overview is majorly messed up. It helps to set member corps of the opposing militia to negative, but it doesn't look like there is a way to just set the enemy militia red (like you can an alliance).
Plus there are other problems, like overview just resetting or plain not working (checking boxes for items to appear but they don't).
It's frustrating in a fleet when you can't make out the enemies clearly. Lots of friendly fire incidents... of course, maybe not accidental...

And that helps how ? that link doesn't say how to remove neutrals.
A few patches ago though I did have it working, only war targets, people with GCC etc showed. Now I can't remove neutrals as it removes everything else.
