Last time i did a Uprade like this it WAS that easy the manufacures make it so The hardware upgrade's are easy Hell now some systems it can be done HOT (powered on and running) And it only takes about 20 min to Build a pc not 2 hours that's to drives formatted ready to take a OS. The Time comes for the raid and the software to migrate onto the new hardware this can take anything from 30 sec to 2 days depending on the upgrade and server load
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha.
If you can do it as quick as you reckon.......... Do you want a job?
I guarantee my company could buy CCP outright with less than a months IT budget and it takes us just as long to do stuff as them with a hell of a lot more resources.
I can build you 94 Desktops in 30 minutes but don't act like you can do it the same with a server, especially one running bespoke software (This isn't the DB servers remember) It makes you look silly.
Also the rebuilding of the raid array is moot as it's a SAN.

The IT world is the real world as this little rock we all float on in space would fall apart with out all of our little toys and it is the IT ppl who keep them running. :-)

Great more time I have to spend in the real world. Of course, it will give me a chance to find out what that yellow ball in the sky is. --------------

Downtime = time to catch up on sleep, late work projects, school work, doctors appointments, visiting the family, washing the car or anything else you've avoided doing for the last year. Think of it as a present from ccp to you :)
Always expect downtime to take 2 to 3 times longer than announced and you'll generally be pleasently suprised.
and to those who said the upgrades should be easy, well..
Knowing how to build a computer and install one is nothing compared to administrator a server cluster when your under pressure to get things up and running correctly and have thousands of people waiting for any oppertunity to jump down your throat at the slightest problem... and the hardware side of it is only half of it.
Just accept the downtime, and be happy that ccp are re-investing some of the money they make back into the game hardware.

Edited by: Schani Kratnorr on 14/05/2004 15:26:15 I must be missing something here cause where I live and UPGRADE usually has the goal of increasing performance and adressing issues that cannot be resolved any other way. But In Iceland it seem UPGRADE means fiddling with the existing platform in such a way that it runs less smoothly, while at the same time keeping your customers completely in the dark about what's going on.
Yet again I have to give CCP a grade of 3 out of 10 for this recent strech of downtimes. +3 points is for annoucing things days in advance allowing their customers to make alternate plans. -2 points for screwing up yesterday (thursday) and changing the scedule +5 points is for meeting the approximated times today -5 points for failing to properly assemble whatever it was you where supposed to assemble and making the game unplayable. +2 points for trying to fill us in before actually going through with the "upgrade" -2 points for failing to inform us about what's being done to fix the MASSIVE lag we're experiencing (at the time of writing).
