I'd like to join the gallente faction, but the only option I have is to join min.

That's because you're in a minmatar station. Head on over to a gallente station and you can join the gallente millitia (or as it's more correctly known, "the awesome millitia").

Anybody can join ANY faction they want, as long as their standings are high enough.
You just need to find a Minmatar recruiting station if you want to sign up. Best bet is in the Metropolis region, though there are some in other places, it's just the first one that came to mind.

Go to a Gallente station. You might have to be in Gallente space to do so, not sure.
So long as you have the standings, you could go join the Amarr if you wanted to, initial race pick matters not at all, standings are everything.

As above goto a Gallente station. It does NOT need to be in Gallente space. Just make sure your not in Caldari or Amarr space when you join.

That sounds like fun. Joining the Gallente navy while in Amarr space. Set up your med clone there and play station games with the enemy faction.
