Hello all,
A site I used to use for a long time to find very detailed info on everything - items, NPCs, etc, seems to have 'gone down' in a sense. http://eve.grismar.net/ is the site, and it was excellent with the best layout and info of any in-game EVE info site but for some reason it seems it's entire database has been erased, and I was wondering if anyone here could fill me in on why - I've asked the folks in-game many times, they don't seem to know. When going to the main page, it gives an error about a missing DB file -- although when loading another page, such as http://eve.grismar.net/rats/index.php (the rats page) it loads fine but upon searching it turns up nothing
Anyone know why this happened? The news page on the site hasn't been updated since May 16 2007. Oh, and can anyone here suggest a good alternative site to find that kind of info? Like detailed info on an NPCs resists and offensive stats? http://eve-survival.net is pretty good but is missing some info here and there.
Thanks, Cornflake

Grismar's explored showed a MySQL error for a while but now it says "Database not connected", so at least something happened.
Whether or not that change is part of a fix, I don't know.

Hmm, this is strange - Just today eve-survival.org started returning an error, a CGI error
Now I've got no more in-game sites I can use at the moment for finding mission info...

I, for one, would throws some real world money at Grismar to get his webapps back up. Hosting can be expensive, unless you have people willing to donate cash for it.

I would too. The webmaster really doesn't seem to care about it anymore, though, as it's not even mentioned on the news page or anywhere that there is a known problem with hosting / or that the costs became too expensive. At least an explanation would of been nice.

Grismar was certainly still active IRL in January, as you can see from his personal website (just replace the eve with www). I'm fairly sure I've seen him in the help channel in the last couple of months, too.
A little web stalking on his website suggests that he has moved house (and maybe job) this year, so perhaps real life is interfering with things.

I will page grismar via MSN to this thread.
He told me awhile back that he was aware of the database issues.
Last time that this had happened, it was due to his web server provider giving him trouble for too many queries or some such.

Ah, I see. On the Changes page (http://eve.grismar.net/changes.php) there's some mention of database stress issues but nothing since then; this is more like a database crash. And I was unaware of the fact he owns a personal site till you all mentioned it.

I suggest some person edits his message and remove the private information from this webpage. Dont think, he will like his private name and adress or old adress on the web :D

Bump too, such a great website, is there any way we can help? Would he be willing to share the source code/db so that someone else could take over if he hasn't got the time anymore?

It's the internet.
You might as well ask why Quickfit still sucks, or how long before Joshua Foirtrain's map will stop showing Tri and Destiny owning Fade and Delkein, or if the alliances will *ever* be synched to the live server.

Thought I'd reply myself, since people have been sending me zounds of mail. Thanks to Syn for pointing me here.
No worries, my site was hosted by iPowerweb, which just made #1 in my list of awful providers. I can heartily recommend never going into business with them and if you are in business with them now, I would urge you to reconsider. As long as everything is fine, everything is fine, but once things start going wrong in a non-standard way, don't expect any support or respect from these people.
After that little rant, the better news: I got most of the data off of the old site and definitely all of the files and I'm currently transferring the lot of it to a new hosting provider. The bad news might be that this hosting provider is in the Netherlands, which could be bad if you're far from this country in internet terms. But since some of the main routing points of the internet are in the Netherlands, I expect no noticeable delays.
I hope to get the site back up and running within about 24-48 hours from now. Sorry for the unexpected downtime, but I hope you all understand it took quite some work and a lot cursing whilst being on hold to get off the sinking ship.
Thanks for the support and the patience and I hope to welcome most of you back on my new location, fly well and have fun, Grismar.
