I started Eve about 2 months ago but didn't really play much due to RL interfering. Picked it up again and want to try out factional warfare. Is it worth it for a newer player to enter factional warfare due to lower skillpoints? Is there a preferred skill path I can follow in order to skill up as soon as possible?
Probably has been answered before, but I can't seem to find a search feature on the forums. :(

FW has a lot of plexes in which only frigates can enter, the FCs need frigate pilots and cruiser pilots.
short answer?

Ideally you would have High Speed Manouevring trained so that you could use MWDs, and also Propulsion Jamming so that you can use webs and scrams. But even this is not a necessity; if you're flying as part of the fleet, even if you're just adding some extra damage you'll be helping. And because larger weapons have trouble with smaller ships, if you're in a frigate then you'll likely be very effective against these smaller targets and thus play a larger part than you might expect.
Bonus points too if you train up skills to use electronic warfare modules like Tracking Disruptors and Sensor Dampeners. These modules are just as effective when mounted on a frigate as on any larger ship, and if you fly a frigate with a couple of tracking disruptors you can more or less completely disable an enemy battleship.
So yeah, definitely get involved. Sign up, ask your militia mates for advice on solid fittings for your ships, listen to your FC in battle and have fun being part of the pew-pew!

Hey, I'm new myself man. Only been playing a month or 2 longer than you. I got into FW and am having a blast. Frigs are definitely needed for taking smaller plexes and tackle (web/scram/disruptor) frigs are always needed. The ECW bit from above was nice and I hadn't thought of that myself. The plus side of frigs is that they are cheap and don't need a lot of skills to be effective.

I'm excited now. Taking a break from mining, going to pimp a cheap frigate and get stuck in!

Thanks very much for the answers! I'm currently gaining some isk's and learning the game in general. The FW part sounds like a ton of fun so I'll be sure to join up.

Minmatar frigates are the best frigates in the game for pvp. Fit autocannons for damage, a 1mn microwarpdrive for speed, a disruptor to tackle, a web to make that tackle permanent and overdrives and nanofibres in the lows for maximum speed. Keep things tech one and you have a ship that costs less than a battleships ammunition. The rifter is a truly exceptional ship and costs almost nothing.

I am not in a militia but have observed them in low security... I see a lot of rifters out there...I am told that every1 starts at the bottom and when I went into one of the new stations I noted agents from lvl 1 thru lvl 4 all in the same station.
