I know that I'm posting this a little bit too late since it happened a few days ago but Tim Russert, who was the moderator of Meet The Press for almost 18 years I think, has died from a heart attack. He leaves behind a son, Luke who graduated from Boston College about a month ago, a father and a wife. I always liked his smile (his grin), his laughter, his love for sports, family, politics, and his work. I also loved his books.
Also, he was non-partisan unlike some of his colleagues at MSNBC like Chris Matthews, and Keith Olbermann. He seemed like a great man. Anyone have any thoughts about him?

Tim Russerts' death was a blow to political commentary. He was the one shinning star among a cesspool of biased @sshats. I will severly miss his ability to grill all who sat across from him and will forever remeber his dedication to getting politicians to say more then they otherwise would let be said.

Honestly I think he dropped the ball big-time on scrutinizing McCain and ensuring that MSNBC hosted debates with decent questions. The fact that he might have had a hand in the Valerie Plame scandal would also be unforgivable if it turned out to be true. This was my opinion of him before he passed away, so I'm saying it here although I understand that it's usually looked down on to speak negatively of the recently departed.

I usually focus on the negative in everything though.
Questions...
First sentence sounds like you are saying that you would of rather the questions to be soft and fluffy. It was his job to scrutize politicians, right?
Secondly, I have not heard of him being implicated on the outing of Valerie Plame, so could you provide a source? I mean what is the worst he could have done...ask a question? On this one you could be right, I just have not heard about it (not the 1st time that has happened)
As for talking badly about recently decesed people, hey; you either liked him or not and you are justified to express your opinion.

The debates are a negotiated deal between the candidates who then pretty much specify the format and questions. The host could of course break from it but then would never be asked to host a debate again...ever. So they pretty much keep to the agreed scripts. Stinks but that is the way of it no matter who is the host. Politicians despise being surprised.
What did he do in the Valerie Plame scandal? First I heard of that.
Russert was a top notch journalist. Old school. Fair but tough no matter who he was facing. There are very few journalists these days who rise to his level of competence and fairness these days. IIRC Mario Cuomo (former Governor of New York) once opined that politicians hated being on the receiving end of a Russert interview but Russert had made Meet the Press a veritable requirement for any politician. They did not like the grillings he handed out but they all respected him.
He very much will be missed. The world will be a worse place without the likes of him brining at least some small measure of accountability to the mess that is modern politics.

Tim was good ppl. We are minus one more greats journalist
I feel bad for the next generations. The real giants of the industry have passed or retired and been replaced with partisen hacks that couldn't subjectively report a good story if their lives depended on it.
ppl like tim russert didn't tell you how to think, he made you think for yourself. he will be missed.

I don't care a whole lot about partisanship in pundit shows as long as what the pundit is saying is grounded in objective reality, even if it is a left or right-leaning interpretation of that reality. My issue with Mr. Russert wasn't about partisanship, but his unwillingness (or perhaps inability) to correctly pin down what is left-leaning and what is center-mass of modern political views, especially regarding the Iraq war. His discussion with Roger Ailes about how the anti-war voice is essentially a marginalized element of the far left (as opposed to a majority viewpoint among virtually all American demographics) is the most glaring example of what I'm talking about. Russert's qualifications as a journalist are otherwise exceptional, by and large.
