Originally by: Joe Starbreaker Somebody posted an idea recently that players should be able to warp somehow to the systems between the stargate-linked, Concord-patrolled systems on the map. In the backstory, only binary star systems can have stargates, so in fact there are many, many stars in between the stars.
The proposal was that advanced exploration tools would allow players to find these stars and warp to them. Such a warp might take several hours or even several days. The poster proposed that players be allowed to build stargates in these systems and add them to the network.
My counter-proposal was that neither jump drives nor stargates should work on these systems, they should be permanently off-network. This would allow dedicated players to stake out little territories of their own. They could set up POSs, mine minerals, manufacture stuff, fight rogue drones (no other rats would make sense), and fight little localized wars without the option of easy escape via stargate. Basically you get more sandbox, but you have to work hard to keep it going.
^ This.
Many more players would move out of empire systems with that.
Problems with current system: - Too easy to just camp a gate and prevent ANYONE getting past at all... fixed entrance and exit points. (Don't respond with 'use cyno nub', you have to get the cyno there in the first place.) - Far too easy to find other players to kill (local channel). - And so forth. I can't think of all the flaws at once, I'm only human (and it's past my bedtime :D).
Advantages of the proposed: - You can enter the system at a random point. - No local channel; you have no idea if there is someone already there (until you run into them or scan them). - Planets, belts, moons, etc all have to be scanned down. They are invisible to you until you scan them. More realistic exploration situation. - More newbie friendly. No chance of getting insta-popped as soon as you arrive, or even before you arrive at your destination. You have time to think about your situation. - Lets young corps effectively hide from wardecs.
Other new features to take advantage: - New 'super warp' that only specialized exploration ships can use to get to these systems quickly (15min per lightyear?). Uses fuel, but no where as near as much a capital ship's jump, BUT still costly enough to make it an investment. Can drop a special cyno that any ship with enough 'fuel' (very small requirement for small ships, huge requirement for larger) can jump to instantly, but using a non-public 'address'. No one can camp it unless they scan it down or acquire the address through espionage. - POS assembly ships. Buy the ship, take it to location, deploy. Ship is consumed in the process, but you're left with a full inactive POS. Has a 90% bonus to the fuel consumption jumping to the special cyno. - Sensor cloaking POS. Shields everything within a few thousand km from sensors. Sift probes will obviously be able to see through it. Allows players to do recon on a system with little risk, and proper full espionage can ensue. - Special cyno can, obviously, jump a ship to any system in range. Zero consumption for industrials, cruisers, and anything smaller.
There, spilled my brains for your amusement. Heh. Ima go collapse now, my eyes won't stay open any longer.
