Hi. There have been quite a few threads on this - try a search. But to sum up:
Typhoon good if you have lots of skills.
Maelstrom good (I use one) - some prefer ACs, some arty (1400s hard to fit, I prefer 1200s for extra tracking, little loss in DPS) some switch between the 2 depending on mission. Shield tank, ofc (XL boost unless you don't like managing it). 3 gyros in lows.
Tempest not great.
Hope that helps.

I've got a Typhoon and you've got to have Gunnery, Missile, and Drone skills to get the most out of it. One of the few ships that need all three.
Did a few level IVs but realized my skills needed more work so back to level IIIs in a Hurricane.
The Maelstrom has great shield tank and with gunnery skills (for Arty) the main emphasis.

I use a Maelstrom for lvl 4s, and with 3 ccc rigs, it can sustain a 800 DPS tank for quite a while. My shield skills still have a little ways to go too, so I would suggest that as the best option. As stated earlier, the typhoon is great, but very skill intensive.

Edited by: Highwind Cid on 18/06/2008 16:10:27 Maelstrom is great. 8x1200mm Meta 3's(Prototype I think)
1x Large Shield Booster II 4x Racial Hardeners II 1x 100mn AB II
3x Gyrostabilizer II 2x Tracking Enhancer II
3x CCC
5x Hammerhead II 5x Hobgoblin II
I can't honestly think of any mission that gives me a problem. I have about 5.3 mill SP as well.

If you're willing to faction fit the phoon it's quite nice. The problem is you'll have a helluva time fitting any T2 weapon fits on it (unless you settle for cruise/auto which is mismatched range). With good skills though and some faction weapons, it can be quite nice.

I've done a ton of level 3's in a Cyclone, so the natural (shield boost) progression was to a Maelstrom for me.
Works great, albeit slower at level 4's than the mission runners using ravens. The great thing about missiles is you can work at different ranges with them without too many problems. With Arties or ACs you have strict ranges you need to work in. So I have two Maelstroms, one AC, one Artillery (yes, I got tired of changing fittings)
The AC maelstrom works great against any mission where the enemy swarms you, usually Angels, but some others do as well. The webber helps make quick work of just about anything except for frigates, have your drones ready for those. The AC's will work out to about 30km with the right ammo. Anything beyond 30km, you might consider using artillery.
[AC Boat] [Highs] 8x 800mm Scouts
[Mids] 1x Fleeting Webber 1x XL C5-L Shield Booster 4x Shield Hardeners II
[Lows] 3x Gyro II 1x Tracking Enhancer II 1x Damage Control II
[Rigs] 3x CCC
The artillery maelstrom uses 1400mm scouts. I'm using that setup to test a different tank than I'm used to (the 3 CCC rig + XL Shield Booster)
[Arty Boat] [Highs] 8x 1400mm Scouts
[Mids] 100MN Afterburner II 1x Large Shield Booster II 4x Shield Hardeners II
[Lows] 3x Gyro II 1x Tracking Enhancer II 1x Damage Control II
[Rigs] 2x Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer 1x Anti-Therm Screen Reinforcer
With artillery you usually have some distance, so no need for the hardcore XL shield booster. You still need those drone skills to swat the pesky frigates that get in close and web/warp scramble.
Swap one of the Gyros with a second tracking enhancer for even greater range on the artillery.
With republic fleet ammo, and decent skills, you can chew through other ships pretty quickly.
Eventually when I get higher skills for missiles, I'll go for a typhoon. Regards,

After two somewhat unfortunate "accidents", I usually fly a sustained tanked Mael now for lvl4s. Can tank 700dps indefinitely and I'm putting out ~450 with my T2 mission specific Mediums and 4x 1200 and 4x 1400 scouts. Love it.
Only at 6 million SP's so Typhoon is a no go due to me flying a passivcane before, hence I have 80k points in Missiles

Eh, no shame in that. Missiles are quite a long way off the standard skill path for most Matari pilots (unless you're training straight for the Phoon). Most people won't even begin to be skilled for the Phoon until 25-30M SP.
I used to care that it was skill intensive, but I realized that nobody's forcing me to fly the ship. So now I've got the L5's queued up to make her really sing. I'm peaking 25M SP so they'll finish some time in the late winter, IIRC.

Phoon for really good skills, Maelstrom for everything else.
But if you're serious about missioning, you'll need to skill up other races' ships.

I am happy with my typhoon. IF you have tank and drone skills you can kite the level 4 missions. takes some time.... but I still have lots of training to do sp things will get faster. OF coarse good drone and tank skills do sound like I am better off in a Domi. BUt I need an excuse to train up missles and projectile anyway :D Otherwise I would be in a domi instead. I consider the missing pleasure hub interior a bug.. even if it is not. Please fix it. :P |

Yeah, the Domi is pure pwn. My Domi lacks T2 Hybrids and still does missions twice as fast as my pimped faction Maelstrom.

I love my minnie ships.. but that is still depressing..
I suppose choosing to fly minmatar you make the choice to do it hard and slow. I like to think of it as learning to fly a ship better, with all the requisite micromanaging.. lol Regards,

I've used Maelstroms for lvl4 missions ever since they came out (the maels not lvl4s :P. although the mael is a superb tank and deals decent damage, it was more sluggish than a pregnant whale.
so i tried to fit the more agile tempest like a maelstrom with less slots and hey, it works just fine!
Gyrostabilizer II x3 Power Diagnostic System II x2 Damage Control II
Republic Fleet Large Shield Booster Cap Recharger II T2 Hardeners x3
1400mm Howitzer Artillery II x6 'Arbalest' Heavy Missile Launcher x2
Capacitor Control Circuit I x3 T2 medium drones x5
Tanks less dps than the maelstorm but the shield booster is always on, heavy missiles and drones deal with anything that get under 20km, and the large-bore arties pop stuff at locking range with ease. Plus, you can actually keep npc battleships at range with its decent speed.

Thats the true sadness of the most beautifull ship in the game. The Maelstrom looks so sleek and fast, but its actually a little like flying a Raven. :(
Maybe someone might take a look at this ship. I doubt it though.

And its good they wont. Its probably the only "heavy" ship in matari fleet there is. We should have at least one! We have fast(er) and weaker Tempest already, no need for another. --- Redesign local/scanner feature - make the place huge, dark and scary again! |
