Edited by: P''uck on 20/06/2008 16:35:34 if you look two pages ahead, i already suspect youre merely trolling. not because i dont like your opinion, but because youre trying real hard to be a **** about it.
some might say this is a prerequisite for this kind of opinion, i wouldn't go that far.

That is strange, because none of the listed would actually vote on it, they'd just do it and kill anyone who found out.
Strange...

That ôthey can do it anywayö or ôthey already did itö are arguments that make it hard to not comment. That may be true and that is why it is important. The difference is that if they did (before this law) then it would be illegal and they could be brought to justice. Also, an important thing to remember is that keeping surveillance on everyone will not catch any terrorists unless they are very stupid. It isnÆt like it is hard to encrypt mails as well as write in code.
With a law such as this, any kind of ôtwo way streetö is but a dream. When people inside the government canÆt anonymously contact media/outsiders to tell about wrong doings (such as illegal activity in the government) without being monitored by the government, then it should be pretty clear that the street is pretty one way.
The source of this law is not some kind of enlightenment, it is fear that is stronger then common sense, principles and ideologies. That I can choose to whom I communicate my opinions, ideas and thoughts should be a right I have. I alone should decide if and to whom I will trust with my thoughts.
To be honest (IRONY), the source of the problem is not that people do bad things or plan to do bad things. The source of the problem is thoughts. Everything begins with a thought. To be efficient the governments should aim for monitoring the thoughts of the people. You never know when some alien idea might ruin your way of life. In that way you donÆt need the hassle to wait for people to actually share their thoughts with anyone, you can take care of the problem right at the source.
When the day come when we have the technology to implant a chip in peoplesÆ brains to allow the government to scan thoughts for specific words and phrases, some people will rejoice and say they have nothing to fear because they are innocent. Others would feel violated even if they are innocent.
The established power in all times have always wanted to be able to decide what is okay for the people to think, what opinion are alright to have, what feeling and idea will bring you eternal damnation. And I am not talking about acting illegal in any way, merely having unwanted thoughts and (God forbid) tell others about it. (Historic example; why let the people ponder and discuss communism when they should without question believe it is evil). If thoughts could be monitored then the establish power will do whatever they can (ie: what the people allow them to do) to make it so.
Once upon a time, principles and ideals were a power that gave us the society we have today. It was things worth fighting and dying for. It was a great time. Despite the established powers best attempt to control alien and preposterous ideas such as that the earth orbit the sun, equal rights for everyone and democracy, they could not stop people from communicating and sharing their ideas with the masses.
Now, I am not saying that we are about the change the world in any significant way, but the right to have and share ideas with only those you trust is imperative. To take away that privacy and right, to let the government monitor everything, is in many ways opposite to the principles and ideals our society is founded upon.

I have no problems with a government hearing every single phone conversation I have. If I have something to hide, maybe it means I'm doing something wrong?
Here's the funny thing about that saying, 'If you have done nothing wrong'.
If that's true, I should be allowed in to the bedrooms of anybody I want, then I shall watch couples having sex.
But that's OK, they haven't done anything wrong, then they should have nothing to hide from including me.
