Since "Warp to Zero" was implemented, low sec is no scare anymore for everyone with a bit of common sense, really.
Was in a low sec region myself a few days ago, two or three systems full with -10 guys but since I was ratting aligned they had not a chance.
Back in 2005, when there was only "Warp to 15 km", yes... I lost a lot of ships to gankers, but now it is very hard for them to catch something better than a noob, a suicidal or a drunk pilot.
My best shot at what you can do is:
* Don't warp to 0 into belts * Always rat from above asteroid fields (so roids don't block your warp outs) * Be aligned to a station where you can dock quickly * Be aware that in low sec everyone is a possible enemy, except proven otherwise * Train Evasive Maneuvering to 5 (align faster)
That way you don't need to care about pirates any more. They will be annoying and interupting your operations, but you won't lose ships anymore.
But, as relief, CCP implemented FW. Highly recommendend. Good pew pew without all that 0.0 hassle and stuff.

Originally by: Liang Nuren TBH, it's totally safe to rat in anything in lowsec, as long as you're aware that everyone in local is a pirate unless proven otherwise. I normally accept home addresses, compromising photographs, and bank account access as proof.

LMFAO!!!!
Liang shows why he/she is the premier disinformation agent on the forum.
Ratting in lowsec is a total waste of time unless it's a backwaters system or you are in a corp that operates extensively in the region. Whatever isk you make from farming the substandard rats, you'll lose getting podded by pirates (like Liang's main).
Stick to doing missions.
Actually he was spot on in this case.
The OP's mistake was ratting with 5 unknowns in local. You have to presume that every unknown is a potential aggressor.
Find a quiet low sec system and watch local and you will be fine. Low sec belt piracy is incredibly hard now, Unless you get lucky with finding the target within a few seconds and they haven't seen you incoming on local or on scanner.

I would use a frigate to rat lowsec, its powerful enough to deal with the spawns there, and much faster at getting out.

Thanks for the continued input ... gone back to missions for a while to build the bank balance up. But I'll venture back into low sec in a frigate sometime soon.
For those commenting on the profitability of low sec ratting - I wasn't going there for the money, but for the experience. Can't get better at it if you don't do it the mission NPC's are a walk in the park at the moment. My total lack of ability to compete suggested I needed a few pointers which is why I asked here.
I've already dropped the sentry drones - they don't actually seem to hit anything
I guess I'm showing my ignorance but I'd have thought that only 5 people in local, none appearing to be in the same Corp, would have been OK - Obviously not though.
Thanks again

Edited by: fivetide humidyear on 20/06/2008 13:22:34 for low sec ratting, sentry drones aren't a good idea as they tie you to a location, go with mediums, it's more than enough, and as someone suggested aim to train up ecm drones as they are a usefull back up.
Liang's advice (ello mate) for low sec is totally sound, if anyone is in local safe up and check out their characters, and even if they have +5.0 sec status assume nothing. Go a few jumps further into low sec where less people are around and the ratting is easier. Of course, when checking info you can see if you fancy taking someone on, the vexor is a fine low sp pvp ship.
low sec ratting witha bit of pvp is fun but high sec missions will earn more
And squatdog, would you like to show me on the doll where liangs "main" touched you?

Most pirates are in frigates.
Long string of T2 drones > frigates with the Vexor bonus
