It seems there's alot of hate for destroyers. Is this true? If yes then why?

a noobship does lvl1's fine, one can do lvl3's in a frigate. just watch the big rats, destroyers are made of paper and light up like a christmas tree on napalm.

I lovem personally, they are a very effective ship for missioning level 1's and 2's but they get a bad rep because of the fitting issues, they are alot harder to fit than a cruiser or frigate and still eb effective

destoryers are fine.
they are a niche ship where the frigate is more of a general purpose ship peopel just forget that.
the destoryer is very good at what it do, **** at every thing else.

I rolled a new amarr alt for FW, and have been grinding L1s for standings for the past few days. Every missions I've found can be done in a beam Coercer without the rats even getting it in to armor.
Destroyers aren't "bad" but in most cases, if I have the skills, I'll fly a cruiser instead. They're really fun in all destroyer comedy gangs though.

Wow! I have a million SP's but when I took my merlin on a mission where 4 rats at a time were on me and I could kill 2-3 of them before they were almost into my hull. Does better shields and armor come with more skills? You said an alt so I assume there are many practice sessions ahead of me.

There are things a destroyer can do that no cruiser can. Like, track and do good damage to an interceptor orbiting it at 15 km/s.

My alt is just a hair over a million SP at the moment. There are a number of skills that will affect various attributes of your ship - shield ammount, shield recharge, armor resists, pretty much everything you can think of. If you track down the program EFT (I don't have a link on-hand) you can put your ship loadout in it, and change your characters skills to see "what if" you had different skills. They really make a big big big difference. The real trick, however, is fitting your ship properly for the mission. You'll want to check eve-agents.com to find what damage types you should be tanking for, and check scrapheap-challenge.com, battleclinic.com, and here on eve-o for good loadouts for your ship.

That's why I said 'most cases' ;) A few Warrior IIs help against the slower inties though.

Yeah, looky in your character sheet under Engineering skills: there's all sorts of funky stuff there that'll give you a better capacitor and a better shield. And fittings can make or break a ship. I've always loved using my Cormorant for lvl 1 missions, and even some lvl 2's back then. :)

Destroyers are good level 1 boats but really need scads of sp to make then remotely effective in pvp. Saying that if your in a frigate of any type or even quite a few of the non-drone T1 cuisers and see an older charecter in a Thrasher and want to test your testosterone. Just Don't.
