I've got a couple of questions...
First of all, which is better and why? The Ares or Taranis?
Secondly, what is a good pvp set-up?
Thanks.

ares is perfect for tackling, the disruptor range bonus allow you to stay out of H neut range , and it's faster than taranis
otherwise taranis is better

Taranis. It's a very good allround ceptor. Kills everything and has web+point for tackle. What else would you ever want. ----------------------------------------- [Video] I'm a soldier, so remember the name |

Ares is better in the tackling department, longer locking range + the disruptor range bonus lets you tackle outside heavy neut range as already mentioned. Which means your point can be very difficult to remove.
Taranis gets a double damage bonus, 50% vs 25% for small hybrids, and a tracking bonus which makes it better as anti-interceptor + light support. 10m3 of dronebay makes it an interesting interceptor too as it's the only one with a dronebay. It's reletivly slow compared to other 'ceptors but it packs the most punch.
Personally I prefer the Taranis as melting crows in 5-6 seconds is fun . As for pvp setups;
Gank Blasteranis; 3x Light Ion Blaster II 1x Faint warp disruptor / 1x Fleeting (or x5 for cheap) stasis webifier / 1MN MicroWarpdrive II 1x Psuedoeletron damage control / 2x Magnetic Stabiliser Field II.
This is how I like my blasteranis. HEAT is very useful in making this setup more effective. Good at picking off enemy ceptors, also great for interceptor 1vs1's.
Railranis 3x 125mm Railgun II's 1x Warp disruptor II, 1MN MicroWarpdrive II, Stasis webifier II (Or cap recharger II) 2x Overdrive injector II, 1x Nanofiber II (TEII, or CPRII can be suitable replacements for the nano).
More of an emphesis on tackling and staying out of web range than the blasteranis. It still kicks out a fair amount of dps, Web can be useful for stopping other ceptors trying to web you too, and can also be useful to the gang. Switch it for a cap recharger II if you want to hold your point and mwd longer. although tbh if you just want to hold a permapoint go with the Ares.
Out of neut range tackle-Ares Highs: 2x 75mm railgun II, 1x Standard launcher Mids: Warp disruptor II, 1mn MicroWarpdrive II, Cap recharger II Lows: 2x ODII, 2x Nanofiber II
Fast and agile point thats hard to shake off. Operates at around 27km. 75mm II's are for killing drones that are chasing you, if you have low cap skills then swap a nano for a CPRII.
There are other ways to fit these ships, this is just how I personally use them.

I don't fly gallente ceptors but the ares seems the most common since the bonuses where changed it must be the low price and longer range tackle.

Ares is for tackling.
Taranis for *****slapping everything with a sig radius below 50. ______________________________________________ Euriti - I'll continue my nerd forum rage! |

Edited by: Spectre3353 on 20/06/2008 11:46:22 Different tools for different jobs. The Ares is more of a gang tackler but its barely going to do anything for damage. Even with decent fitting skills you'll be lucky to be able to fit all the high slots on it and it's probably not going to be able to track and hit targets with the MWD running. The Taranis is all about damage... I don't even like to think of it as an interceptor. More like a very fast, very expensive super frigate. It is a GREAT solo ship for PvP and still pretty useful in gangs. The Taranis setup I like to fly is pretty much the cookie cutter one:
3x Light Ion Blaster II's w/ Faction Antimatter
1x 1MN MWD II 1x X5 Prototype Web 1x Warp Disruptor II
1x Damage Control II 1x Overdrive Injector II 1x Magnetic Stabilizer II
2x Hobgoblin II ----- http://evenewb.blogspot.com/

To be honest now the ares is more expansive than the taranis :)

If all you need to do is speed-tank and put points on people, use a full-out nano Ares. You won't do squat for DPS, but it's great in fleets as a fast tackler. To encourage myself to stay out of gun range, I don't even put guns on mine; just a standard launcher and a pair of salvagers to help clean up afterwards.
If you want a more well-rounded 'Ceptor that can tackle and actually does great DPS but requires a bit more practice and attention to fly properly, go with the Taranis. You can fit them as a fast 'ceptor-killer, as a fleet tackler, or as an all-out gank boat that handles like a minature neutron thorax. Very nice little ship. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

Does just as much damage for 2/3 of the price at the expense of some speed. I fly it like a mini-Thorax; it's good for jumping miners in a belt in LoSec but it's low speed makes it less than ideal for chasing around other 'Ceptors. It's also a very tight fit CPU-wise; 187.25 out of 187.5 CPU used. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |
