I played all the versions of Elite when they came out. The one with RL physics sucked at combat. It was no fun. The non RL physics one was much more fun to fly.

when you stop ur ship aux thrusters probably do fire. While i agree the modeling of gravity near a celestial object is wacky, you dont fall, the thruster thing is explainable. And given the adances in quantum mechanics and gravitational field manipulation (jump gates, tractor beams, warp drive) i'd say some type of gravimetric anchor that generates a local gravity field to anchor a ship to a coordinate in spacetime isnt beyond them.

theoretically youd have 2 put energy into a tachyon to slow it down, perhapse its a similair thing with a warp bubble, the less energy the more speed.

Everyone who says you're flying underwater is wrong. A few years ago someone did scientific tests and concluded that you are flying around in 40/10 engine oil.

isnt it possible that your ship's onboard compute auto stops ur ship using thrusters? or the grav anchor theory i said?

OK you get 1 billion ISK and sex with Ernest Borgnine fine.
I didn't say I was paying it so...who is paying out the prize money and sex for these fine winners?
Send me 10% for running the contest. Thanks!
I will pay out 45m to the person who claims the prize in post #500 in this thread, with 5m going to the OP if this happens. If the thread gets locked before then, no payout.

Originally by: hall monitor I turned off my thristers and the ship stopped. Shouldn't the ship keep going and shouldn't I need to hit counter thrusters to slow down? It's like playing a space game in the ocean! Why didn't the developers take this into account? I am sure that if you have read this far you are one of the few EVE forum posters who actually take the time to read a post...You get 1 BILLION ISK and sex with the partner of your choice whenever you want. Thankyou for being educated and having more than 3 brain cells. This is just an experiment to see how many people will read the first sentence and flame me to hell and back. Oh yeah - I LOVE the game so much that I can't stand real life now. Love ya!
I require my 1 billion ISK, and my chosen partner is the OP.

<grins in a maniacal, geeky fashion>
If space and travel in EVE were to truly emulate the real life physics of a true vacuum, things would be quite different. That's because no ship would have a 'top' speed.
Consider a spaceship in real life (ignoring the problem of fuel for the time being), obeying Neuton's second law of motion (Force = mass * acceleration). Say it's travelling away from the Earth at a speed of 100 meters per second: pretty slow, hey. The ship engages its rocket thruster, increasing its velocity by 100 mps, then disengages the thruster, leaving it travelling at 200 mps. The thing about space, is that in the absence of any strong forces acting on the ship like wind resistance, is that there is nothing causing the ship to accelerate or decelerate once the thrusters have been disengaged - nothing stopping it from continuing at its current speed in perpetuity. Consequently, if the ship activates and deactivates its engines for a second time, its speed increases by (arbitrary amount) once again. Assuming infinite fuel, if the engines of the ship were never deactivated, the ship would continue to accelerate until it approached the speed of light (Einstein tells us that it won't ever travel at the speed of light, but it will get close).
If these laws were obeyed within EVE, the game would change: but not as much as you might think. Every ship, even the largest freighters, would eventually be able to reach phenomenal speeds through nothing more than their basic engines: but because F = ma, and thus a = f/m, the acceleration of the ship is restricted by the ships mass. Mass is already in game, all though it applies less to the mechanics of speed than it does to ship 'agility'. Afterburners, MWDs etc. would increase the factor of acceleration, but the top speed of all vessels would be unrestricted by anything bar the speed of light.
Practically, in EVE, this would obviously have a bearing on combat - although it might play a role in reducing the number/effectiveness of nano gangs, since every ship can travel uber fast - but since it would still take inordinate amounts of time to travel around star systems (taking both acceleration and the size of the system into account), not to mention between systems, super-lightspeed travel through warping would still be the preferred method of getting around. It would demonstrate the limitations of the game world if people could point their ships in a random direction and eventually nearly hit lightspeed, but it could also open up a new avenue for the exploration profession to go down. But, I'm rambling.
tldr: It's a game, meh.
