Hey all,
Yesterday I lost my Caracal to a pirate guy. That's fine, I was in 0.3 in a PvE rig and deserved what I got.
Here's my question though - I'm ratting in a belt, he warps in on me (he's got -9.99 sec status, so I run). I was aligned (being only sort of a noob) to a nearby planet and warp out. I warp from planet to gate and jump to another system.
I'm sitting at the gate, cloaked, reading my corp chat, when he jumps to the system I'm in now. So I run off again, towards a belt.
The belt I go to is one of six orbiting the same planet, so they're all stacked on the screen (as in, it wasn't obvious where I was going).
Rats in this belt are in Cyclones (like my pursuer) so I hit my AB, start to align, and then the %&^%er warps in on top of me again, warp-scrambles me, and destroys my ship.
My question is, how did he do it? He found me every time waaay too fast to have been scan-probing, and I'm hesitant to attribute it to luck.
Any ideas?

He could see you warp away, and see which direction you go. You were in a cruiser; it's possible he was in a more agile ship such as a frigate, or perhaps just a more agile cruiser. I'm guessing a frigate, though; they align faster, warp faster, and lock faster than cruisers, in general. When he finally caught up with you, it sounds like he just got lucky--he saw the direction you went, and just randomly guessed the same destination you warped to (more likely he warped to belt 1, and that's the one you randomly chose--as many people do).
When you were sitting at a gate cloaked, he may not have been actively hunting you at the time; it is only when he saw you uncloak and warp toward an asteroid belt that he got on your trail again.

Besides luck , there are a few possible explanations.
If you warped to the top or bottom belt , the number of belts at that planet does not matter - he can easily guess where you went.
He could be one of the few to use range scanning instead of directional - he got belts in his overview and checks the exact range , adjusting his scanner accordingly. Still it should take a while to figure it out.
Remember : when you're being pursued , warp at range. It's very hard to catch someone warping around , normally. Of course , warping to the station is usually the better option , too. Warping to a stargate usually works against single pursuers , as you can either warp to somewhere else or jump out. Lastly , a cyclone can't tank sentries forever so you have the option to stall him at gates / stations or even fight back.

It takes some practice but if you know what you're doing it's pretty easy to use the directional scanner. If he saw which planet you warped to even planets with a lot of belts can usually be scanned and located accurately within 30 seconds. Less if he got lucky. Even if he didn't know which planet you warped to it's not that hard to scan down each one individually and check.
If he knew what he was doing he honestly probebly spent more time in warp then actually scanning you down. _______________

A rat wil normaly lock and appraoch you so just warp into belt and align straight away.... or dont rat whilst being hunted.
A good prober can have a result on you in roughly 30sec's and a experianced scanner can pin point in about 20sec's of being in the right area.
Good luck

If the celestial items are in a cluster together, the directional scanner wont tell you which of six belts you land in from 12 AU away. That'd be some bad ass scan skill.
OP, notice the tactical overview button next to your shields / armor / hull / cap / speed icon. If thats active and you click your target in space or on overview, it draws a line straight to where they went as well. (unless something I havent noticed has changed recently...havent used it in a while)

Not mentioned yet: Don't warp to 0km when you're trying to escape to a celestial object. It's too predictable.

and the mistake that killed you was that you turned on youre afterburner.. you would not be able to warp before you are atleast up to 3/4 of top speed... hitting the afterburner jest prolong the time until you can warp.. Especially if u have bad navigational skills...

What i usually do is warp to a gate (if there is no station in the system) and wait at the gate. THIS IS ONLY IF THERE IS A SINGLE PERSON HUNTING YOU.
Stay at the gate and wait for him to catch up. Make sure you're in jump range and wait for him to respond. If he attacks, jump, cause he wont be able to jump, if he jumps, run the other way.
