Okay, of all the sub-bs ships, what is the best for salvaging and looting mission wrecks.
Right now I'm using a thrasher. This is my current setup. High: 4x Salvagers 4x Tractor Beams Medium 1x AB 2x Cap Rechargers Low 2x Expanded Cargoholds.
This works fine except that it only has about 500m3 capacity.
So I'm wondering what would be better. I naturally think of the hurricane. The setup would be like this:
High 4x Salvagers 4x Tractor Beams Medium 1x AB/MWD 3x cap rechargers Low 6x expanded cargoholds rig 3x Salvage Tackle
It has 4x the capacity of my thrasher, but I kinda worried about the hurrican's agility, I've never flown one. I would like some input. Are there any better sub-bs ships? Amarr is the tank OR gank race. Not the tank and gank race. |

Cane is probably the best sub-BS. Although the Apoc is supposed to be darn nice as well.

I once tried a hurricane, but didn't like it and went back to a catalyst. However, it's not a bad ship if you add some nanos and inertia stabilizers. 2-3 expanded cargoholds should do the job, so fill the rest up with agility modules. Make sure you don't go faster than 500m/s, as that's faster than your tractor beams can go.

Well, the Hurricane's agility is quite good to start off with, but 6 Expanded Cargoholds won't do it any favors in the agility department, so it'll probably turn alright when not moving, but at speed things could get ugly. Its turning circle probably ends up huge, especially with the MWD.

Not sure how the Apoc would be good at salvaging. It would have horrendous agility.

Agility modules would kinda defeat the purpose of switching since it would require less cargo capacity. Hmmmm.... Amarr is the tank OR gank race. Not the tank and gank race. |

Defeat the point of switching?
1000m^3 is enough for most missions. Might as well throw some agility modules into the low slots instead of having more cargo space you don't need.

Not really, i find myself warping out 2-4 times per mission in my current setup. I guess I could be a little more picky. Like not picking up cap boosters but I don't like leaving anything behind. Amarr is the tank OR gank race. Not the tank and gank race. |

Oh you really have to forget about cap boosters. They're enormous. I'd pick up everything, but once you start filling up, I'd dump ammo and anything that doesn't sell well. T1 non-named cruise launchers, for example.

All large mods, especially guns, refine well. on a typical mission I will get around 2k loot. I used to use an arma for salvaging but now I use a golem and I don't bring my alt along.
My argument for having a BS salvager is simply if you have an alt it can survive somewhat in a hostile environment and provide extra damage in the form of drones.

Never use tech 1 expanded cargoholds. That's disgusting and offensive. Thrasher with two expanded cargohold II has 650 m3 of cargo, which is just barely enough to fit two medium secure containers for looting. If you fit those containers you'll actually have too little space to run your salvagers with, but still, it's good for looting.
The Stabber is also good. It has great speed, better tank, and better capacitor than the thrasher, and can hold about 900m3 IIRC. Of the ISK farmers I've seen, the Chinese guys usually use Armageddons and the English-speaking ones usually use Hurricanes. Make of that what you will. . Seeking frigateers!

Hmmm.... Unfortunately my first account is a couple hundred million isk from getting a Paladin. Along with 28 days of training. Of course after I get AWU lvl 5 for siege mode(last skill i need for a fully functioning dread), I'll only 11 days from maurader.
The problem is that the paladin doesn't have many slots after putting guns on it. 3 slots can't do to much. Especially without salvage rigs. I could fit all tractors and tractor anything within 40km of the paladin and then let this account salvage it. By that time I'll have most of it salvage. Possibly bookmark the rest of the wrecks and use a destroyer on this account after I turn in the mission.
But right now, I fly an gank fit abaddon. So an alt that can tank the room would be great. Plus it takes way to long to kill small ships in some of the missions and battleships that stay past 75km. Their resists are probably high against em/thermal. Having a ship like a domi with 1 large gun (for getting agro), 2 drone augments and a tank would help incredible but then it only leaves 3 highslots for salvaging. (14 days away from domi) Amarr is the tank OR gank race. Not the tank and gank race. |

Two tractors and a salvager on a Paladin works fine of you start salvaging as you're fighting - and only go after the juicy BS wrecks. It's multitasking sure but you can make a salvage tab on the overview and keep switching between the two to keep it uncluttered. I make more ISK with the Paladin because the range bonus allows me to warp into a room, head for the next gate and kill/salvage as I manage my tank and drones.

I use a Hurricane with all Cargo Expander IIs in the hold. It will scoop all but the largest lvl 4s in one trip.

I have found the Drake to work well as a salvage/loot boat.

Edited by: Honor H on 23/06/2008 11:12:38 I use a hurricane It has 6 x Cargo Expander II's 2 Cap batteries a 10 nm AB and a 10 NM MWD (in or out of deadspace) 4 x salvagers and 4 x tractors. 2 x Salvage Tackle with Salvaging 3 works Very fast.
With the AB I do about 300 m/sec and with the MWD about 1000 m/sec with the 6 Cargo Expander II's It holds 2060 cubic meters, which is usually enough for each room in a level 4.
I love the utility of having tons of cap (Catalyst was a bit low in cap) and the ability to either MWD or Afterburn. I just wish it had a Tractor bonus!

i currently use a catalyst but i've been runnin gnumbers to see if a hurricane will give me a bit extra cargo than 829m3 i get from my catalyst.
if cash is tight then catalyst is good (bar the fittings/rigs) if u have extra cash for a 30 mill ship and need summat with a few HPs and a better tank then go for a hurricane, u still get a 4/4 traccy/salvage mix.
Still think there needs to be a T2 Salvage barge or specific T1 salvage barge brought in :D

The best salvaging boats are, moving up in size:
Catalyst Cane Phoon/Geddon Kronos/Paladin
Catalyst because it has the biggest cargospace, with just enough cap to make do, although mwd time is limited. T2 dessies, aka interdictors might be better but not many people have them trained. Since the loot volume increase, dessies don't really cut it anymore, imo.
Cane for 6 lows, nice agility. But it suffers from max 6 locked targets.
Phoon for agility, 7 lows, Geddon for 8 lows. Mega isn't far behind.
Paladin and Kronos tie the top tier with 4k+ m3 cargo and 40km tractors, 10 targets. Vargur and Golem good seconds. The tractor bonus + large cargospace makes up for the missing highslot.
