I've been pretty critical of the UI of EVE Online, not to suggest I'm not a big fan of the game as a whole. It's partly due to my slight research and involvement in design and interaction design.
I have a few very basic suggestions that could possible move EVE in a better direction. Below is a mock up showing a different (although common) kind of chat function and cargo window:
Larger
I'm curious about why not? I don't feel in the context of the game or even now in 2008 that we should be so dependent on traditional windows. EVE should re-evaluate how it approaches the HUD within the game and its relationship to the interface of the game as a whole. Obviously traditional windows are necessary but I feel more can implemented as a kind of overlayed aspect of the HUD.
Larger
Added to that, the Shortcuts. Why can't I implement shortcuts for the context menu items? Show Info, Reprocess, Sell, etc. In the image above I provide some simple Shortcut suggests that could work with these new elements in the HUD of the game. I want to know if there are any plans to redo the UI. Basically it feels tedious having to drag windows every so often and right-click (or CMD-click) and carefully move my mouse (sometimes on a laptop) so that I can "show info".
I admit, I've brought it up in discussions in the game and very few people seem to agree with me. I suspect they haven't used REALLY easy and intuitive interfaces very often. They make a huge difference.

Yes, please!
I'll be thankful for even the slightest UI improvements ¦¦¦ Eve what it lacks in frames per second it more than makes up for with drama per thread. |

This new chat appearance would actually be pretty cool.
When you have a separate window for Local, one for Corp, and one for PMs... then the Overview, Drone Controls, Watch List... there's a lot of windows taking up the area you should be watching combat and such.
The cargo view I don't quite get. But I would like to see something done with the cargo bay display.
For instance, I use GSC while hauling to increase storage. So my bay registers FULL constantly, even though the cans are empty. Why not allow the containers to display their capacity as well, and have it factored in. The cargo bay meter is shaded full, but only solid for the amount stored in the bay and Cans combined.
Another slight modification, suggested the other day, is to make Drag and Drop a little smarter. Again, with a bay full of GSC, I'd like to Drag and Drop onto a particular Can and have the item go into it. Currently, the system assumes I meant the packed cargo bay instead, and gives an error message.

In regards to the Cargo view, It's overlayed and in this case, only showing two items at a time. What I'm proposing is instead of moving your mouse and dragging the scroll bar to view your items, why not have shortcuts like Shift-Z (left) and Shift-X (right) to view items from left to right. Then the item on the furthest Left will be the item automatically highlighted. You can then click Shift-I to "Show info".
This will save the trouble of moving the mouse there when instead you might be too busy right-clicking on a ship to bring up the context menu. -- autechre - ep7 - track 1: rpeg estevancarlos.com |

That's a fantastic idea... for folks who are keyboard oriented. But those of us who like the mouse too, don't have a problem with a simple flick of the scroll wheel to search the Cargo. And displaying only 2 items at a time, would be very annoying.

Well, it should be more than two. Smaller icons I suppose. I just threw this together for my example. More than two, definitely. -- autechre - ep7 - track 1: rpeg estevancarlos.com |

Even for "thrown together" it looks pretty good.
Lots more open space, to appreciate the new Premium graphics.
With all the windows scattered everywhere, I think most people don't even pay attention to the space view. Just the Overview and their modules. "What am I firing, and at whom?"

I think UI improvements should be the next upgrade either before or after Ambulation. Some people might think its unimportant but if it done well, it'll make life easier for everyone. -- autechre - ep7 - track 1: rpeg estevancarlos.com |

Edited by: Astria Tiphareth on 24/06/2008 07:48:04 Nice ideas - given that we still lack the ability to shift a lot of the more intrusive windows to a second monitor (for those that have them), making better use of the existing screen space sound great.
The other area that would seem an obvious companion to this is combat notifications - you know, that thoroughly unhelpful pop-up in the top-middle of the screen: 'some sneaky sod has just placed a good hit on your shiny new ship for 450 damage'. Having a transparent scrollable message log for these that I can move around would be good.

Surprisingly, I couldn't agree more, and I'm usually one for new content/gameplay fixes. Improving the UI makes everyone's lives easier and along with the Trinity upgrade, could bring EVE into the 21st century in terms of look & feel. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation or alliance, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... |

I dont appreciate your concept. I prefer the small, high-contrast text, resizable windows and scrolling ability.
