If you open People & Places, go to the Places tab and click "Add Bookmark", you get the bookmark window. The BM is only actually made when you click OK, so open the window, warp and then click OK in mid-warp.

Open people and places theres a button create bookmark at the bottom, you have to hit it while you are in mid warp and that can take some practice especially in fast ships like inty or cov ops.
A tip would be use the solar system map as that helps you locate yourself during warp. Even then though it can be hard to make a good safe.

It seems that the BM process submits your 'add bookmark" request to the server when you click "ok" and the server responds with where you were when when it receives the "ok" input. So the BM shows up farther down the trail than where you clicked "ok." It also seems like the more BMs you have in a system the more delay there is so there may be some client lag as well.
And this is all just my guess as to why BMs are never where you want them.

Wow, this sounds a lot better than my method where I would estimate the amount of cap needed to get to my desired bookmark based on how much was needed to warp the full length, then I would burn my cap down till it was below the needed cap level and then when it recharged I would activate warp triggering an insuf. cap to warp to destination message. It took a lot of practice at first, but now I can get to within an expected area almost every time.
I cant wait to try setting a bookmark in-flight on my next system.

Setting a bookmark exactly where you want it mid-warp can often be a frustrating and time consuming experience, if the lag isn't good.
I find it's usually easier to just spam the crap out of the button and lay down whole rows of bookmarks along my warp route and then pick the closest one.
Really, I think making mid warp bookmarks needs to be cleaned up somewhat, as all these hundreds and thousands of inter system bookmarks that explorers pop up can't be good for the server load, can they?

I right click on my ship while I am in mid-warp and then choose Bookmark Location. I just really prefer to have as few windows open as possible, and it is easier to select a good spot that way. it seems like it BMs the location your ship is in when you right click your ship and scroll out to the BookMark location, much in the same way as right clicking a locked target sets the distance you are at for keep at current range no matter when you choose that option.
