I plan to create a spreadsheet that will allow me to compare my set-ups as opposed to individual weapon systems. I plan for the spreadsheet not to make my eyes bleed like many of the others available do (no offense meant to anyone).
However I am still an Excel noob. Albeit a persistent one.
How would I be able to select something from a drop down list and have the sheet enter the relevant numbers in a group of cells? I've scoured the web but keep getting data validation and filtering help for lists. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

Access is the path you want to take.

Use VLOOKUP Padawan. Check Excel help for more info.
Very easy to use & perfect for what you want here.

For the dropdown, you need to use data validation from list. For the second part, use lookups (HLOOKUP, VLOOKUP) that depend on the dropdown field.
If you want the dropdown to be conditional (i.e. to depend on another dropdown), well, that's more complex and trust me, you do not want to go there.

Conditional dropdowns can still be done in excel, but you might end up with a few blank options at the bottom of the input list. One way to do it is to validate from a list of cells whose values are in turn given by vlookup functions.

One thing you could try is having all the data on one sheet/sheets and using a "pivot table" to choose which set of data to display / summarise it onto a seperate sheet.
They use a drop-down or drop-downs for selecting categories. It's quite a powerful tool.
IF formulas might also be useful for this.
You can have some True / False cells (or just a 0/1 in the cell) which other formulas then depend on and you can use IF formulas as a category for sorting data for a pivot table. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

That's why you use OFFSET in conjunction with COUNT/COUNTM

In my experience making spreadsheets, you tend to end up using a lot of lookups and nested IF statements. Really you can do anything with enough IF statements. My advice is to create a sheet that has all the rough work and calculations and such and then create a front-end sheet that simply displays the results you're interested in with a nice UI.

Thankyou all especially Lexx and Victor. Darned easy once you know what to actually look for. I guess I should take some time and go through the alphabetical list of functions to see what else I'm missing.

That's pretty much the plan.
I very much enjoy making spreadsheets (that little statement could cost me my RL rep ) but I've only ever learned to use them for administration purposes, never anything this... "scientific".
Another question then, for a chart how can I have an axis display, using our earlier example, range without having to provide cells stating the value at each range? How do I get a chart to show a calculation rather than a number? Is there a way to get the chart to scale with the results? Sig removed, inappropriate content.
