My question is how is em as a primary damage in pvp with most ships being armor tanks (gal, ammar, some mim). I understand em pwns shields but is not so good against armor tanks. I want to start training Amarr and lazers but I'm afraid I want be dealing enough damage against armor tanking ships because of the high resist. I heard that CCP fixed the em resist but is it enough to be effective (from your personal experience not eft). Thanks.

1) There are many ships that either speed tank (which lasers can often track) or have a "tank" consisting of little more than a few shield extenders and maybe an invuln. Lasers will do absolutely wonderfully against these.
2) Tri-hardened (and many ships that are very heavily tanked do sometimes tri-harden) and non-minmatar T2 ships very commonly get EM as their lowest resist. Lasers will do fine against these.
3) The same applies to conventional shield tanks, although if they use a specific EM hardener, EM will be about tied with explosive for the highest resist... but you generally only use an active EM hardener if you're active shield tanking (don't know how true this is), and for the most part lol@active shield tanking in pvp.
4) More lightly tanked (plates, a few EANMS) will indeed have their highest resist against EM, but hey that's what you get for the above three advantages. Nevertheless, well-skilled Amarr characters with well-fitted ships will still deal a frightening amount of damage even against these kinds of ships.
5) Also the fact that your optimal range with lasers lets you deal damage from well out of blaster range and well into autocannon falloff means that you will often be dealing damage sooner, more accurately, and more often than those other kinds of weapon systems. __________________________________

Lasers are superb in a certain niche: the "not quite" engagement distance (not quite gate, not quite sniper)- that distance is where they outtrack and outdamage most other weapon systems. Afterwards you usually rely on your hitpoint buffer to sit out the rest of the combat- at least in theory.
With the recent buffs to the zealot and apoc lasers now also have two platforms for medium to long range in their respective ship-classes, which really make them shine- other than that there's just a lot of ifs and whens, but all in all they are at least remotely up to par again.

And even if you're not in that limited engagement range, you can always load multifrequency and deal near-blaster level damage without being close enough for your crewmembers to lean outside and bludgeon the enemy ship with baseball bats. __________________________________

TBFH, that's pretty damn hilarious. "at least remotely up to par".
Heh. There's a reason so many people are training Amarr these days - and it isn't because they suck. :)

Lasers are fine, a lot of the times when I look at the resists on my armor tanking ships EM is actually the lowest.

Some laserboats have problems. And it's not the EM resists.
Usually you'll be lacking medium slots and you'll be having cap problems. But then medium pulses go *whendenden* and are awesome. Other pulses don't go *whendenden* and as such are much less awesome.
Anyway, lasers and EM damage are great.

Just an example for a good ship: Zealot
Ideal dps ship for nano gangs laser damage: - instant damage + hot alpha (in nano gangs: 1-2 salvo, and the enemy is usually dead, no time for rockets, no time to get to zero, and fight with blasters, thats why lasers and autocannons are so good) - good damage at 15-20km (outer webrange, ideal gatecamp range) - good tracking (enemy is flying, u are flying, big need for a good tracking) - Em damage (if enemy is nano, he will shield tank, with usually shield extender buffer, so usually lower em res then the rest)

Pssst. Since the nerf EM is the best damage type.
Don't tell anyone.

mega pulse vs tachs, hmmmm...
i must admit i have an obsession with tachs; i can't help myself they are so awesome.
missioning last night: me: oh look, 20 or so rats at 90km. lets start with the frigs [targets frigs][hits F1-F8] me: um.. where the frigs go? i didn't even see laser light up [targets cruisers][hits F1-F8] me: damn, that was quick. look, the BSes have closed to 75km [targets BSes][hits F1-F8] me: just a little butter on my crumpets. yummy! oh! mission done already? *sighs* i haven't even deployed my drones yet.
Abaddon + tachs = clearing room at 50 to 100km range without a scratch to your armor.
i'm tempted to try fitting some pulse lasers because of some of the stuff written in these forums.
anyone know the advantages/disadvantages of pules over beams?

Pulse deal higher damage with lower range. Drain more cap also than beam lasers
