Just like to begin by pointing out that this is not like what ive been reading in the above thread so im assuming it may be caused by something else.
Basically when i go to log in (correct password) eve hangs on authenticating before eventually timing out, can anyone explain or otherwise help me get back online?

try clearing your cache. Sometimes helps with problems like these.

take that as a no, so you moved my query to "resolved" issues with a single incorrect attempt at a resolution. Cheers

this can be the same as the disconnects problem, 1) clear cache 2) login again [also try and alt character that has no items - it may get in faster] -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal, InEve,

I'm getting this problem. I had no connection issues before yesterday when I got this while trying to log in to change skills.
Have tried fresh installs on two different computers running two different operating systems, and neither will get past authenticating.
Tracert shows no problems. No lost packets, no individual connection takes more than 7ms.

I'm having the same problems as the OP, heres my traceroute:

With that traceroute thing I just put in the eve IP and clicked a random server, was that the right way to do it?

I am also in Manchester, though by the time I get off the JANET pipes it's in London.
I get no problems routing to 87.237.38.200, but it fails to reach 87.237.38.100 with 100% packet loss after ccp-ic-124901-ldn-thon-s2.c.telia.net (213.248.90.90).

Well, as Telia is a company that specifically sells gaming services, I'm inclined to believe that it's well managed pipe. Which means that as my connection does this:
so-0-1-0.warr-sbr1.ja.net [146.97.42.169] so-3-0-0.lond-sbr3.ja.net [146.97.33.18] ldn-b2-link.telia.net [213.248.104.153] ldn-bb2-link.telia.net [80.91.252.13] ldn-b4-link.telia.net [80.91.250.237] ccp-ic-124901-ldn-thon-s2.c.telia.net [213.248.90.90] [87.237.38.200]
it comes straight off the JANET system and straight onto Telia ones, so there shouldn't be any problems along the way. The university provider claims they don't block any online gaming, and it worked a few days ago, so I'm fairly sure all ports are available (though I might check that later). But the question remains, why can I get right up to the server but receive no handshake response?

Same exact thing is happening to me, it's very odd indeed... Anyone at ccp got any input about this? it comes straight off the JANET system and straight onto Telia ones, so there shouldn't be any problems along the way. I'm having a similar issue as was experienced with the last patch before the expansion.
When the EVE server is busy (30,000 players) i can log in fine but this is during the day for me, when it gets to evening about 0700 EVE time i cant log in atall and sometimes takes awhile for the server status to come up.
Last time it went back to normal after they did a server side hotfix during DT of some kind dunno if its the same problem now...
