Just wanted to say that I absolutely love Dwarf Fortress.
I have 3 games installed on this computer. Eve, DF, and N+. That's it. I really don't need any other game for my life to be complete.

I downloaded DF along with a graphic upgrade but I still went insane :(. Stuff was moving all over the place and I felt like I had no control. Yet i liked the game Majesty. Weird.

I fully agree with Lala Ru, but IMO a major revamp of industry and mining will never happen.
Here is how I would do that though:
1) Mining
Keep the current system for those who like it, but at the same time let's add new things:
-planet rings harvesting -the ability to move, fragment roids and scoop small ones -the ability to anchor warp drive on huge roids to bring them to mining facilities, where Dwarves Fortress kind of mining can be done thanks to drones.
2) Industry
Add a +50% of manufacturing time to the current system, but add the same time add:
Out of stations shipyards, where players have the ability to move and assemble the different parts of the ship they're building, thanks to drones and tugs. This would give the ability to industrialists to work together on a ship, and the ability to pirates to attack them. _________
Someday, EVE may look like this. |

Don't ever put Eve and Dwarf Fortress in the same sentence again.
And I agree mining should be made more interactive, to hopefully deter more macro miners.

Total copout answer: make mining a "Match-3" clone.
Better answer: make mining a Tetrisphere clone.

If you all like Dwarf Fortress so much, go and play it, but leave EVE out of it! I like to play Super Stardust, but I don't expect CCP to turn EVE into a twin-stick blaster!

Originally by: Digital Solaris The undeniable fact is that you have a choice, do you want to pick up industry and join in on the mining ops or not? Also, if you partake in mining ops, why are you making it sound more serious than what it is? Grab a drink, put up your feet on your desk and relax.
And some things are not more fun than what you make of them.
Again, that's the point. Many people are NOT wanting to mine and wanting to fight instead, because fighting is more interesting than mining. However, mining is vital for the industry and alliance in general.
I can get an drink and relax any time I want to, so there's no reason I should pay CCP for the privalage. Again, dragging ore from your cargo to a can every so often is not gameplay.
Originally by: Digital Solaris Idiotic reasoning. How can you expect a game to serve you with "fun stuff" 24 hours a day throughout the year? You really don't sound like you are looking to play a game, you sound more like you want to read a children's book, with big, brightly colored pictures of childish joy.
That's the idea of the game. To have fun. While it's hard for a game to be engaging at all times (hence the much-malinged "grind"), that should be the goal it should strive for. If I wanted to work, then I would go to work and earn Loyaty Points with my boss.
Originally by: Mazzarins Demise I think most importantly, as others have suggested, making this completely optional but not provide so much of a bonus that you feel like you HAVE to do it. Also, if its going to take on the form of a mini-game or what have you, attempt to make the window as little as possible. Already have enough on the plate of watching for rats, pirates and thieves while having plenty of other windows open as well.
I like the idea though, it has some potential. While i don't think it'll be as intuitive as Dwarf Fortress in this regard, a small boost in interest and interaction definitely couldn't hurt.
Well, in Dwarf Fortress you can just highlight a massive area, tell your miners "mine this" and then leave them alone. I usually do this to my woodcutter and herbalist anyway. So someone who's semi-AFK can just hit "mine all" while someone paying attention can mine in specific areas, and use the feedback on what was there to refine their search for the magic motherload of ore.

Even something as interactive as Gears of War "active reload" system would be nice. Maybe at some point before your lasers fire again you could interact with the client in some kind of timing game to improve either the duration or amount mined.
I agree with Lala Ru, I find mining terribly non-interactive.

Another possibility they could do is to make Mining totally non-interactive, where you CAN just watch a movie or play Dwarf Fortress, or browse TVTropes or something. The current system just really straddles the wost of both worlds, being not interactive enough for it to be fun, but still requiring constant attention. For all those who say it would encorage Macro Miners, we already have tons of Macros in the current system. What this might encourage is genuine AFK mining, in which case ore-theiving has never become more fun.
Don't get be wrong, I would love for a more interactive system that would make Mining into a genuine profession requiring skill. However currently, Mining isn't a profession, but isn't something you can just fire and forget either. It's just tedious, repedetive, work.
