Fear not - after realising that the petition would have been seen as *probably* non-essential, I browsed the forums and found a fix for myself...
If anyone is still suffering from this problem as I initially described - try the following:
1) Find you prefs file, it should be in "whatyouhavecalledthegamefolder\cache\prefs.ini" - it might be wise to have a shortcut to this on your desktop.
2) Within the file (it's listed alpabetically) there is a setting for fullscreen, defaulted to fullscreen=1. Change this to fullscreen=0.
3) Save the change.
I could get in after doing that and spent a night playing in Window mode. After sleeping and the server downtime I can play fullscreen again, but if it borks for you again - at least you'll have a workaround.
Note that some O/S's are a bit temperamental switching to Window mode. I use XP and haven't had a problem - I believe Win2000 and/or ME can get upset.

I should also say that this problem only seemed to come about after the 1077 patch. I'm going to be nice, and assume that the Devs are working to solve this for a permanent fix.

I've tried switching back and forth from fullscreen and window mode. Doesn't fix my CTD problem.

Nope... tried this on both my XP and win2k machine.. Eve crashes to desktop everytime.. Sort it out CCP!
