What's the deal with that key? Backspace is right next to it and does a way better job of deleting text

HAH! Brilliant, a thread called DELETE, that's ACTUALLY about the DELETE key.
Fantastic.
No, I don't get it either. But sometimes the backspace key takes me back a page instead of deleting stuff...

What I hate is that damn insert button that is right next to backspace. The first time I hit that and a few minutes later I could not figure out what was going on when I tried fixing parts of my paper that needed editing. I was like why the hell are my letters disappearing.

It deletes forwards rather than backwards! Also, we need a key for the movies in which pressing said delete key completely erases a computer (or somehow for some reason detonates the C4 hidden inside the case! DH4!)

Indeed. Just the other day I was editing a document, and I wanted to delete the character after the cursor, and it took me TWO key presses to do so: right, and then backspace.
But now that I have discovered the delete key, my editing efficiency has been doubled! Just think of the number of characters I will delete in my life time, and now it will take me half as long! Aww man, now I've got to plan what I'm going to do with all those hours that I'm going to save... - Originally by: Grarr Dexx YES PLEASE TOUCH MY ABSOLUTION

Don't have a SysRq on my keyboard, but I have also wondered about scroll lock. Now I know.
As I couldn't find any use for it, I set it as the push to talk button for teamspeak, and set one of the macro keys on my G15 keyboard to scroll lock, so I can talk without typing letters or doing anything unwanted. I'm sure there are better ways around it, but it works. - Originally by: Grarr Dexx YES PLEASE TOUCH MY ABSOLUTION

on a second thought, the delete key is there, because Alt-Ctrl-Backspace sounds silly.

Although SysRq doesn't perform a SysRq these days I still find it immensely useful. In case you didn't know, it takes a screenshot of the active window rather than the whole workspace like PrtScn does (in Windows, that is). No longer do you have to crop images to hide incriminating stuff! (fetish **** wallpapers, wow icons or whatever applies)

"ALT-Print Screen" takes a snapshot of the active window to the clipboard. Just thought I'd pass that tip on if anyone is cropping full screen grabs!

I always thought of the delete key being used to delete files in a file system browser, and backspace for deleting characters of text. I don't think backspace will delete a selected file.
Okay, what about the insert key? Anyone know what that does? __________________________

Its the same as paste if you hold ctrl afaik, but in some programs it just acts as one key for that function.
me? i wanna know wtf is up with the idiots who put the "power" "Sleep" and "Wake Up" keys on my keyboard right above the arrow keys, one slipped fingure and "Woops!" computer goes off,,,

The insert key allows you to change from insert cursor mode into overtype cursor mode in some applications.
