I've been looking at the information on planets while I wait around for explorer scans to finish and I noticed that they don't make any sense at all.
For example New Caldari Prime is listed at 55 K (around -218 degrees C). That is near the point where gasses turn to solid (with proper pressure too). Another example I found is Quier III is listed as an ice planet but the temperature says 1851 K.
I realise that not everything in this universe will conform to know laws of science, however a planet of over 2000 degrees C covered with ice? How did the game designers come up with the information on planets? Does it have any real relavence to game play? Is K Kelvin like I am assuming or some new form of measurement?

Those values were seeded by a random number generator. They will be corrected to more realistic values when/if they actually serve some purpose.

In case you haven't realized, CCP isn't very good at the whole science chemistry math physics thing.
I'm still trying to figure out how they got submarines to actually fly in space...

You could just blame your ship sensors/scanners for being inferior in the time being for giving you wrong results

So has there ever been any discussion as to wether or not planets will ever have some funtion? I know it is kind of silly, but that has always fascinated me. Exploring alien worlds, seeing what kind of planets are out there.

There have been, but it is all far beyond the horizon of speculation.
Currently the purpose of planets is to have a place to anchor Outposts.
