This is a thread to state some of the basic skills that set an experienced player from a Newbie. Hopefully newbies will come across this thread and come away with some new ideas on how to better survive EVE.
1) Newbie: Looks at the cost of a ship. Battlecruiser = 32 mil, Assault frigate = 12 mil "Hey The assault ship is cheaper!" Veteran player: Looks at the price of a ship after insurance is collected. Battlecruiser = 8 mil, Assault frig = 11 mil.
2) Newbie: A hostile ship entered belt. You are now dead. SURPRIZE!!!! Veteran player: Hmm a couple hostiles entered local. I should either get to a safespot or at least watch the direction scanner at 360. Whoa, these guys are in my area. I'm out of here!
3) Newbie: Hauling along some expensive cargo. Autopilot warps to 15km. Why am I being targeTABOOM. Veteran player: Warp to 0. Never scanned. Brought a scout just in case, and to top it all put a few shield extenders to make it more survivable. (Alternatively): brought the most expensive stuff in a covert ops frigate for security.
4) Newbie: Hey look! It's a frigate as powerful as a cruiser. They're called Assault Frigates. Veteran player: Wow. It's a frigate that costs as much as an insured battlecruiser(see 1), but is as powerful as a cruiser. It even has to give up the 1 avantage frigs have to do this, speed. Not to mention the added vulnerabillity to nuets. Talk about useless.
5) Newbie: I'll mix in some short range blasters with my long range railguns. That way I'll be effective at all ranges! Veteran player: Blasters mixed with railguns? You won't be effective at all ranges. You'll be IN-effective at all ranges. Better to do something good then nothing.
6) Newbie: I'm glad i spent all that time and isk on this battleship before I trying to PVP. Hmm, why are there 20 people targeting me? Veteran player: I'm glad I lost all those frigates/cruisers learning how to PVP well before moving on to something bigger. I never would have avoided that 20 man camp without what I learned.
7) Newbie: According to EFT this ship rocks! Veteran player: According to my experience that ship will suck. EFT is an aid. Not a be all end all of EVE combat. _______________

Oh, the poor assault frigate. It's a class that seriously needs some love.

Hehe, no matter the experience, even the most gnarled player will make all of those newbie moves only slightly less.

8) Newbie: I can't defeat nanos with my current T1 setup while sitting on the gate, therefore nanos should be nerfed. Veteran player: Oh wow there are numerous fittings to defeat nanos, not a problem.

I can asure you that barely any newbies flies Assault frigattes rather than Cruisers , the time it takes to train Frigatte from lvl 4 to lvl 5 alone makes sure of that. Not to mention that even uninsured, a cruiser is cheaper.
About 3. Newbies will lack skillpoints to be able to fly cov-Ops. They will train to at least be able to use Battlecruiser for missioning before any T2 ships.
But they shall be able to use one of their completly untrained alt in a noob-ship to scout ahead. Absolutly free and always at hand from the start. And even if the noob-ship goes *boom* they will lose no Isk.

Why does every thread on this forum have to turn into a nanowhine?

Because nanowhiners have the reverse-midas touch. Everything they touch turns to crap. _______________

Edited by: Bronson Hughes on 25/06/2008 21:47:46 9) Newbie: Oh look, a module that lets me warp even if I'm being warp scrambled. Vetran Player: Oh look, a whole series of modules that make it harder for me to ever be warp scrambled.
10) Newbie: Hey, XYZ Alliance doesn't have sovereignty in this system, they won't mind if we shoot up some belt 'rats. Vetran Player: (as said newbies die in an Empire-to-0.0 gatecamp) Oh look, more rookies trying to rat on our turf.
I have been the Newbie and the Vetran PLayer for both of these examples.
EDIT: My #9 is not an attempt at a nano-whine. It's more a commentary on the common occurance of WCSs on newbie PvP ships. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |
