I'm a Gallente prospector and I am looking to move up from my mining frigate (Navitas) to a frigate to do some missions with. For some reasons, my Mining Lasers don't seem to intimidate the Rats too much.
I found some info on this forum, but it was from three years ago and the Tristan was listed as having only 3 Hi Slots, so I'm looking for something a bit more current.
So far I'm going back and forth between the Tristan and the Incursus. This is just for PvE ratting and missions in High Sec. Any advice for the newb?

Honestly Remy, both the Tristan, and Incursus are great lil t1 frigates, and will or should serve you well in game. Main difference between the two is a Tristan has launchers, which means you need/should train up missle/rockets to use it to it's fullest potential.
An Incursus has the extra turret, and no need to train up for missles.
Both can, with skills, handle any Lvl 1 mission, and even tackle some of the easier lvl 2.

If you have the skills to use T2 Hobgoblins (which you probably don't but if you started Gallente you may be close to) I've found a sensor-boosted Imicus to be a strong lv. 1 mission ship due to the fact that it has by far the longest effective range of any frigate due to it's drone control range bonus, and three Hobgoblin IIs a few levels of drone interfacing behind them do as much damage as any T2 small gun.
In the hands of a skilled drone user the Imicus is a good micro drone boat - it can kill mission frigs before they get in range fairly easily.

Tristan is really cute but you need twice as many weapon skills to use it as effectively as the Incursus. . Seeking frigateers!

Edited by: Remy Ishiba on 27/06/2008 05:36:48 Great info so far.
I downloaded EFT and have been looking at what I can use. I know people say Gallente are usually armor tanks, but with so few low slots it would seem to my newbish eyes to be better suited to maybe passive shield tanking.
From what I could gather from EFT, I could put a couple Shield Power Relays on the low slots and do 2 or 3 Shield Extenders on the mids (depending on how useful an afterburner would be).
Then I take some Light electron blasters, and I'm set.
Here's the EFT info --------------------------------- [Incursus, Mission Runner] Shield Power Relay I Shield Power Relay I
Small Shield Extender I Small Shield Extender I 1MN Afterburner I
Light Electron Blaster I, Antimatter Charge S Light Electron Blaster I, Antimatter Charge S Light Electron Blaster I, Antimatter Charge S
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
Warrior I x1 ---------------------------------
Would an armor tank really be more useful?

I just made this up in EFT:
HI: 3x 125mm railgun MED: cold-gas I arcjet, stasis webifier, capacitor recharger LO: small armor repairer, damage control I
Now that I look at it, this frigate kinda sucks compared to the Rifter, which is supposedly the Minmatar equivalent but has two more fitting slots... . Seeking frigateers!

Part of the philosophy behind the armor tank is that armor repairers are more energy-efficient than shield repairers, and the resistances are higher, meaning each hitpoint is worth more "effective hitpoints". The damage control boosts resistances to armor and hull significantly. . Seeking frigateers!

In frigates, destroyers and cruisers, I found that speed is the best option for tanking. Fly an Imicus, get aggro, send your drones after the enemies while you run away.
Personally, I'd upgrade to Destroyers and fly a Catalyst with railguns.
My experience with drones so far has been that my 5 x Hobgoblin IIs do about 60% of the DPS that my Drake does firing Thunderbolt Heavy Missiles. I can imagine that they would do a much larger proportion of damage compared to any frigate or destroyer.
So for level 1 & 2 missions, I'd look at an Imicus, and train the shortest possible path to being able to fly 5 x Hobgoblin II drones, then work on Scout Drone operation and Drone Interfacing. Give the Imicus enough shield to tank the damage you receive while recalling your drones and warping out :)
And remember to train hybrid weapons so that you can complete Worlds Collide without all the NPCs going nuts at your drones. I hate that mission.

The Tristan is overrated, but cool looking. Even with great skills I find it severely lacking compared to the Incursus, which is very easy to use at low skill levels.
So go with the Incursus. It's far more versatile and fun to fly.

I wish they found a proper use for the Tristan hull though, it's a fine looking ship.

As was alluded to, the Tristan is very hard to fit well for a rookie pilot. Back in the day, I completed all the L1 missions in an Incursus. It's cheaper, easier to fit, and will do the job. The Tristan is very nice but will take some training to fly well. It does pack more punch than the Imicus, imo.
The other choice would be the Imicus, which I also had good luck with.
If you're willing to move out of a Gallente ship, the Rifter would be my choice. Great on missions and PvP.

Edited by: Oweim on 27/06/2008 17:48:53 I am noobier than thou (lol) and I enjoy my little incusus. Based on feedback here from a LevelI (early) mission I did I am now trying a new config. I have it set up as:
Highslot: 3x125mm Railgun w/Iron S Midslot: Ship Scanner (not important but had room see below); Lowslots: Small Armor Repair I; (forget name but) A Power Diagnostic Unit.
I love that Diagnostic unit, it has no power charge, 20% capacitor charge and it improves both my base shield recharge, cap recharge and my power available jumps to 41, so I can put in (when I find the right one) another mid slot mod that takes 5 or less power. I haven't done any really tough missions, just did some pick up cargo at a station get jumped by a bunch of baby rats. Had to warp out once but it was stupidity or something (for some reason my ship kept stopping) but otherwise my 125s and Hobgoblin I did them all in without incident.

Personally I think the Nemesis stealth bomber should 'open and close'. If you look, it's clearly designed to look as though it could transform.
Imagine if you could have an 'attack mode' (for lack of a better term) where you can fire off your cruise missiles/bombs (someone out there MUST use bombs???) and then a defensive mode where the ship hull closes up and has extra armour/resistances but can't attack.
Trouble is, CCP would have to do the same/similar/a race specific version for the other bomber ships.

Edited by: David Detritus on 27/06/2008 21:57:20 I used an Atron for lvl 1 missions, it served me well, bloody fast too, but the best thing to do is get a destroyer, training time is nothing and it will make things so much easier as others have pointed out above.
Catalyst 7 x Prototype I Gauss Gun - Antimatter Charges 1 x Salvager I 1 x Y-S8 Hydrocarbon Afterburner 3 x Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane I or 2 x 200mm Reinforced Titanium Plating 1 x light drone of your choice
Worked for me but more experienced players may give you a better fitting than that

Another Gallente prospector here , flying a Catalyst . Although my fitting skills are still poor I can fit five 150 mm rails (and a salvager) which is sufficient for any lvl 1 mission I have encountered thus far . I completed Worlds Collide on my 4th day and three more times since , as well as Shadows of War 5/5 ect. Have a look at the Catalyst ; IMO it can make lvl. 1 missions seem more boring than mining .

They did find a proper use for the Tristan hull. Look at the Nemesis Stealth Bomber.
As for which ship to use, I'd recommend the Incursus or the Imicus. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The Incursus is a decent gunboat at the frigate level. The Imicus is a drone boat at the same level, 3 light drones if I remember correctly.
If you are looking to just devastate any frigates you find in missions, I'd say the Catalyst is the boat of choice. Its a destroyer class hull that is a certified frigate killing machine.

1) Before I say anything else - DON'T FIT BLASTERS TO LEVEL I MISSION SHIPS. The whole thing with Blasters is getting in close and orbiting the enemy. The whole thing with level I missions is they try to swarm you with lots of crappy frigates.
Orbiting and Blasting are a tactic to be used against a small number of larger ships.
Kiting is the tactic to be used against large numbers of small ships. Get their agro, then run away and kill them as they come. For this - you want the biggest guns and the best afterburner you can fit. Nothing else really matters. If you put on big guns and AB away from them, you'll kill them all without getting your shields scratched. Worlds Collide is trivial using this tactic but if you blast and orbit you will die.
2) If you want a challenge doing level I missions use the Atron. It is very fast but if you mess up - it is also very fragile. Any of the other three frigates will do fine as long as you fit big guns and a good after burner.
That said, the Tristan is the toughest of them all though it is a little slow. With a good AB that's not a problem.
3) The thing you really want to work towards though - is getting a Destroyer set up with big guns, a good afterburner, Tractor Beams and Salvager's. Getting the destroyer is really easy. Destroyers Level I is like 15 minutes in addition to Factional Frigate III. The big thing here is that while you don't need a destroyer to complete your level I missions, it makes salvaging them much faster. Believe me, if you aren't salvaging your missions you are throwing away a fortune.

Yeah. I've got a bunch of fun stuff I'd like to play with. Never did try out that Kestrel ... *sigh* I can make more money using the destroyers and I need the money ... so that's what I've been doing ...

Edited by: Remy Ishiba on 30/06/2008 04:36:11 Thanks for all the help everyone, especially Tigg. I am currently running in a Inscurus, and after a few mistakes in fitting the ship (I now know that ships can apparently catch fire, an impressive thing to do in the vacuum of space), I now have a solid little low level mission runner to fly while I train for better things.

I hear you there. I am almost able to fly a well equipped Catalyst with a salvager and tractor on it. I started training for that as soon as I saw how much that salvage was selling for!
