For anyone that doesnt know, Heniz had a advertising company make them an advert to show off their new 'Deli Mayo'. Which it then pulled off air when it received a few complaints about it. The advert can be seen here. The two sets of people to blame for the whole 'controversy' about the advert in my view are
1) The company making the advert 2) The British public
The main point of the advert, for the people that don't get it, is that by using the deli mayo it's like having a NYC chef in your kitchen, and thus the Mum has turned into a chef. It's not supposed to be a g.ay couple nor is it trying to make any sort of political statement. The company who made the advert suck because they should have simply put in 1 sec of footage of the Mum getting the mayo out of the fridge before changing into the chef. And the British public suck for getting all up in arms about it and taking offense at something so trivial.
Thoughts?

I thought it was funny, but I "saw what they did there". Even my dad, who would be described as a bigot by some, would have thought that ad was funny. ---------------------------------------

Edited by: The TX on 27/06/2008 10:14:18 I'm a British public, and I LOVE that advert. I think it's brilliant.
If it's "THAT BAD" (Dr Evil quote-fingers) then why not just keep the ad, but only after 9pm?
And who is REALLY that sad enough to complain about it - honestly, GET A ******* LIFE. Are you lives really so dull and boring that you have to complain about something so insignificant that nobody is FORCING you to watch anyways? Ad breaks are for making the tea anyways. I don't drink tea, but afaik, most brits get up and go make the tea during the breaks.....

I am part of the American public. I think the comercial was funny as hell and I got the gist from the get go. I am sad to say that if that comercial made it on air in the States it would have probably met the same end unfortunately.

Thank you for posting that.
I'd only seen the media's take on it, and they made it sound like it was a *** kiss.
It's surely the worlds least *** kiss! That's kinda the whole joke. He doesn't want to kiss the guy.
Very funny, and no offence whatsoever.
I wonder how many people are offended after seeing that advert directly themselves and how many are up in arms being faux offended second hand by our wonderful tabloids.

Why do the words Daily and Mail come to mind?
I would check it out to see if they have been up in arms about it but I have the policy that if my eyes ever scan across that no better than soiled toilet paper rag, then I'd have to flush them with caustic.

Well obviously I have tarred everyone with the same 'Daily Mail' brush here, which would amount to sensationalism, but since I'm not working for the media, I don't mind doing it :P
Here is a link to the BBC reporting on it, I think reading the comments is the best part of the article.
This is a classic I think.
The greater controversy should be to do with the claim that a mediocre sandwich spread makes you feel like you are in a New York deli.

*sigh* well other than it being obvious the ad company has made the ad with the inevitable hysteria in mind and the swift retraction from Heinz...well call me cynical but they did that very quickly. Did they really think the ad wouldn't generate any criticism?
I think some of the criticism has come from the time the advert was on, and tbh if I had kids I wouldn't want them to be watching the advert until they were older.
Xrak you've jumped the gun a little perhaps, but if the majority of people in this country had liberal views then the LibDem's wouldn't be the third party. Oh and btw, in the context of the advert it really is a *** couple and cannot be interpreted in any other way - you're an idiot in that respect. Its a 20 second advert, not something to be viewed and later dissected like a film.
I don't have a problem with the kiss per se, its more the promotion (in a sense, or perhaps normalisation is the better word?) of a non-typical family unit. Yes two parents are often better than one however many still have issues with *** adoption/surrogacy and of course your sexual orientation has no bearing on how good a parent you are.
I just get dismayed at the loss of traditional family values that seem to be behind a percentage of the social degradation we're currently suffering. Bring on the homophobic flames, I hear them in the distance...

PS. The ad was fine and humorous. Makes me ashamed to be in the same country as a bunch of whiny little kids, again. -----

Watch it again. The point is that it's such a perfect NY Deli style, they are all substituting the burly chef guy in place of their mum.

Quote: 'The mum transforms into a New York deli chef because this sandwich taste is so good," he says. "It's like having your own deli chef in the kitchen. It wasn't intended to be a *** couple, it was intended to be a humorous metaphor for these great-tasting sandwiches' says Nigel ****ie of Heinz
There we go, now everyone can see what they were trying to show with the advert.

Fresh toppings.

For a general idea of who these people are - Bambi, that adorable movie about a fawn and his rabbit friend, took heat because of the part where Bambi's mother got shot. Yes, it was said that was too disturbing.
I honestly feel that if some people got their way we would end up living a real life episode of equalibrium.

I dont work in advertising, but I should because I am clever and cool!
What was done here was deliberate pulling of an add. If you can get a very few people up in arms about something (not hard to do), then you can "pull" the add and make a loud noise as you do. This loud noise will then generate more attention, and get you more add power for your money.
I have no way of proving this is what happened, but I find the technique used in the most surprising ways.

soon enough, no-one will dare show anything even remotely hinting at controversial or spicy, or fun... everything showing on TV and in movies will just be the same lukewarm, tasteless, and runny crap that only offends those who have an IQ above 100. theskyisfalling, theskyisfalling, theskyisfalling! |
