I was wondering why don't rats have pods? I recall a rat in a newbie mission had a pod, that was me first squish. But apart from that fellow, I don't see any rat pods. Are they robots? Or can they not afford a pod?
Also how is it fair that when you pop a rat, you get the bounty alright, but to get a pc's bounty, you need to pop and pod?
Boost rats! Or nerf pcs!

Some of the backstory suggests that the pirate ships and most other NPC ships are fully crewed rather than run by pod pilots. But then, I read a chronicle the other day that seemed to be implying that the majority of ship captains are now pod pilots, not sure if that was intended to include NPCs or not.

A log I picked up said that a lot of the lower end pirates (rats) cannot afford clone contracts. Players get free clones because they technically are trained and serve empires (the Chronicle 'Elites' I believe said this).
Thats what I've read anyway.

The reason.
Rats are piloted by crews and human captains, thus no pod.

Pod pilots are a rare breed - most humans can't adapt to using a pod, and as such most pirate factions use crewed ships. Some of the stories hint that piloting via a pod also enhances the ship abilities, hence us destroying massive amounts of pirates in our wake!
I like to think that all ships have an escape mechanism for crews, and some of the backstory suggests that clone backup systems can be implanted, and you don't have to be in a pod to use one (it was the story about a photographer and some gallente vandals). That'd also explain how Hoborak Moon and Zor keep turning up without evidence of a pod warping away when I've killed them for the tenth time..
