Hi
Been playing eve for 1.5 years I think it is now, and have had an research agent going for about 1 year. Didnt win any blueprints :(
What I am wondering about is if its worth it for me to start skilling for production, so I can make items for my own use and a few for sale. I dont have any blueprints.
How much skill time will it take to lets say be able to produce up to battleships, and would it be worth it when I dont have the blueprints? Is it better for me to just sell the datacores from the agent and buy ships and parts on the market?
Thankful for any advice!

The basics:
For production, the only truly important skill is Production Efficiency. If you're going to make anything above frigates in high sec, you want this to level 5. Even with that you'll barely be breaking even on a some items (lots of margins are in the 10-20% range in high sec).
The number of slots you can use to manufacture stuff and the range at which you can do this are secondary and simply depends on your personal needs and play style. They don't affect profitability.
It works like this:
Unskilled character: PE:0 with an un-researched BPO/BPC: 135% of the materials necessary Skilled character: PE:5 with an un-researched BPO/BPC: 110% of the materials necessary Skilled char with research: PE:5 with a researched BPO/BPC at ME:20: 100.49% of the materials necessary
Figure that in high sec, a lot of items go from 110% to 130 above "perfect" manufacturing costs. Some times less (there are various reasons for less). And you'll see that to make a consistent profit you need a) PE5 at a minimum, and PE5 with researched BPs as a preference.
Now you don't actually need to buy the BPOs yourself, on BS you can make use of the BPC market and buy a copy of a researched BPO. These will eat into your profits a little bit, but a ME:30 might save you about 4.3mil isk in materials and only cost you 1mil so it's still worth it if you're not into true "volume" manufacture.
Hope this helps

So the short version is that if you dont produce alot of items, the net profit/save compared to just buying is only about maybe 10-20% in high sec?..

Volume, no volume, that's the savings, you'll get the occasional one where it can be up to 50% on the small stuff, but otherwise yep. Mind you it adds up over time. |

With the introduction of invention in the Revelations Patch, the R&D BPO lottery died. That was roughly 1,5 years ago. So you never even had the chance to win one.
Use the RPs to buy Datacores off your agent instead. Sell them or do some invention. |
