Big ships probably shouldn't roll as much when turning -- if at all. The speed at which they do implies agility beyond their real capability. |

Very good idea.
But I say, why stop at big ships?
I would like to see a change in the animation and feel of ships flying and turning. Make it feel more like a powered burn, not just a nice and easy roll and pull forward.
My thread about EVE's outdated mechanics doesn't exactly cover this specific issue, but I talk a lot about wanting a change in the propulsion mechanics, and this is one that I would like to see.

Meh, I'd rather CCP work on fixing actual game issues than "this doesn't look quite like I feel it should". There's nothing really wrong with how ships turn at all. |

Yes. Yes there is.
While realistic depiction of space flight is not what EVE online is all about, there's little denying that the depiction is horribly inaccurate. The complete lack of reaction control system (or ANY maneuvering systems, actually) certainly doesn't help either, but I forgive CCP for not adding that visually.
The simple fact is that starships don't roll at all unless they need to for alignment reasons. Aircraft roll to change horizontal direction of flight. Spaceships don't need to, because their steering isn't dependent on aerodynamic things like lift and drag. Real starships simply turn in the direction they want to go using reaction control systems, then add thrust to change course using the RCS and/or main engines. This is how EVE ships should turn, whether or not they visually depict some sort of RCS.
EVE physics resemble flight in some sort of fluid (air is a fluid too). In my opinion, EVE spaceships feel and look like they are actually submerged underwater and fly (swim) like submarines. The biggest reason they look and feel this way is because they bank during turns instead of simply turning into an 'odd' alignment. For whatever reason, EVE ships stay [mostly] aligned to a horizontal plane, again just like submarines and airplanes do. If they got rid of that, EVE ships would stop banking into turns and would feel more like actual starships.
Just my two cents.
PS - I agree with you. CCP has bigger fish to fry for now. |

Very good idea!
It would change the feel of the game alot! I think as follows though, back should be a function of speed combined with rate of turn. Lateral g would be an issue so banking to offset that would still be required.

The only disagreement is the feel that would happen without ships being on a tactical plane. I think it would look silly with everything at different roll angles. |

Space ships don't need to roll. But we don't fly space ships. We fly submarines. At least according to the game engine.

ps: space ships don't have a maximum speed below c either. |
