Something like that at least...
Now I need you driver monkies. I'm running XP Pro right now and whenever I install the drivers for the 8800, XP goes into freak mode on startup and freezes.
Everything else is running fine ATM, but without any VGA drivers it's running the equivilent of something like a 90's onboard video card. Yikes. Can't even scroll down pages without lag...
Otherwise I'll have to go back to having to install Vista 64 (which I need to do for the 4 gigs of RAM anyways, but I don't really want to venture into vista until I get this thing fully operational on XP)
HEP!
Edit: The drivers I'm running are the newest ones from MSI's website that supposedly are for Windows 2k and XP. Also the driver disk that came with the VGA makes XP do the same thing. Edit 2: Let me get back to you after I try the same thing again after updating XP from service pack 1... |

I and my q6600 comp support this statement.
Get G0, I've got the old type and it refuses to OC. |

Updating windows has failed...time to attempt Vista. *gulp*
Vista is pretty good now.
Just turn off UAC, Indexing, Automatic Defrags, and System Restore and you'll be golden, and update everything ASAP.

Installed vista
went to the nvidia website, found the proper drivers...
Boom. Worked perfect. Just finishing up updating the Mobo's Audio networking and general chipset drivers and then I get to go hunt down the patch for running 4 gigs of ram on Vista, install, haul the Behemoth II out to the kitchen table, open her up, throw the other stick in, start her up...
and THEN?

Heh Congrats, I tried XP on my new gaming rig a few months ago too, I have so many problems with it too.
Vista installed flawlessly and I've not had one single problem since.
Hope you enjoy your new machine |

Edited by: Atomos Darksun on 29/06/2008 05:38:29 Everything is now running fine. Have yet to have a serious graphics test, that'll have to wait for tomorrow for Blood Money and TF2 to finish redownloading.
The only damned thing that is not working is the onboard audio. It's managed to screw my mic so that I can't use it and it's only using my right speaker - so I'm hearing everybody chatter on vent through one speaker while I can't say a word.
I be considering buying a cheapo sound card now . . .
Edit: Mic works fine now. Managed to fix it. Doubt I can fix the speaker issue though. May still have to go with the new sound card

Patch for running 4 gigs?
What are you smoking? - I installed Vista 64 with 2 gigs installed then upgraded to 4... I didn't need any patch.
I know there's an issue with Vista going into an infinite reboot loop if you try to install it with 4 gigs of RAM - perhaps that's what you mean? |

Yup definately gonna want more memory, but lucky for you another 2gigs is pretty cheap now days (DDR2).
Might want to upgrade the gfx card to a DX10 compatible one too for Vista otherwise there's little point upgrading from XP (I'd advise 64-bit version of Vista if you go for more than 3 Gigs of ram). |

Vista is fine now to be honest.
It was horrible on release, up until right after SP1 was launched, now it's not too bad and is pretty much just as stable as XP.
The 64bit versions can be a bit tetchy with non WHQL drivers, but other than that it's fine. I'm running 64 bit Ultimate on the following hardware with no issue :
Asus Striker II Extreme 790i board. 8GB OCZ 1333MHz DDR3 (OC'd to 1600MHz @ 1.9v) Q6600 G0 (OC'd to 3.6GHz @ 1.38v - both processor heatspreader and heatsink contact plate lapped and machine polished) - have had this as high as 3.86GHz @ 1.47v stable, but I'd like to preserve the chip's life. 6x 500GB Samsung Spinpoint T166's. 2x nVidia ASUS Top Level EN9800GX2 in QSLI (was running a single one but decided what the hell, I play at 1920x1200 so I may as well.)
I had some initial driver issues with 175.16 drivers for the GX2's, and had to revert to running 174.74 for a couple of months until there was a new release on the 23rd of this month (175.19). All the issues I had are now gone and it's perfectly stable on the lastest drivers.
Vista isn't so bad, it uses a bit too much processing power for my liking, but it's improved a million times over since the launch of SP1 imo.

XP pro is more than adequate, you only really need to think about vista if you're looking at a 64 bit OS for large memory utilisation. Don't even consider looking at XP64, imo it's a horrible minefield of an OS with all sorts of issues.

Poasting. And he's not smoking anything, there is a patch for vista with 4 gigs of RAM. If you don't know about it, you don't need it, so I am too lazy to explain.

Honestly I've been running Vista and gaming with 2gb and never had a single problem, dont know why people say 4gb is a must?
