I just finished a 50000 loyalty point L4 mission "Vengeance" which turned out to be quite intriguing. The good part of it all was that it generated over 15 million in bounty. However, it seemed plagued with supernatural phenomenon.
The tool of choice for my L4 missions has been the Navy Apoc, and since I recently managed to squeeze out 400DPS @ 230km's out of my setup, I found long range sniping to be quite effective. However... to my surprise, shooting NPC's on this mission brought on invisible foes that have the power to take out enemies far beyond that of 230KM! - Yes... the damage and prompts were visible and shields fell accordingly... however, there were no sources seen or targetable anywhere's in sight.
Anyways, I warped out and returned with an alpha strike setup to clean things up, but I wonder though... just how far these mystery shooters could actually fire!
So I wondered if anyone else has experience this type of mission behavior before?

NPCs don't always operate 100% like players are able to.
Also I'm sure you meant 5000 LPs, not 50000. :) If there was a 50k one everyone would be all over that.

A yes, thanks for pointing that out. It was 5000.
Well I realize NPC's aren't players. However I find it ironic that they have invisible ships with weapons that defy all the laws. Like I said, I didn't get a chance to truly measure the range of these invisible(cloaked perhaps) foes, however... I was on the run and at the limits of my alignment, saw 300DPS vollleys coming onto my ship. So whatever it was, it seemed to be well within optimal range at +250KM.
Did I mention there were no ships, beams our sounds while this was going on? It seemed truly from the great beyond...

If you think 400 dps is effective, you need to... rethink. The damage was probably your ship trying to self destruct for being abused as such a pathetic damage dealer.
Make suicide ganking more difficult!

yea... but thats at 230km
switch to multifrequency at closer ranges (probably about 50-60km) and that damage goes up quite a bit. that and 400dps is about the same as a cruise raven without drones

Desync. For some reason your client did not have the ships on grid while the server had them in range to hit you. Strangely enough there does not seem to be a foolproof way to sync the client again. I had things like that continuing even after docking up and warping back.

Yep, sounds like desync. It happens sometimes. Relog and it will be fixed.

As I mentioned that is @ 230KM. If I lower the range it climbs accordingly up to about 1100(never calculated) Keep in mind that this is minus drones and implants. Having said that sniping with this setup usually allows to take out an NPC battleship in about 3 cycles which is not to shabby if I do say so myself. |

Now that you mention this, I think this is very likely. I noticed my shields acting iradically. They feel then rose as though I repped(which I was not), then the damage prompts appeared. With this in mind, I am damned glad I didn't loose my ship. I think I would of crawled into a dark corner afterward, with all the named items I have hanging off this tub. |

Edit for speeling.

Yes, high sec. - I will never mission in low sec with a ship that matter, no matter where the LP's are at.

You know that is a possibility. I will double check that shortly. Though I did not see or hear any of the hit effects though which seemed kind of odd.
On a high note, I have optimized my long range setup a little more and it looks like I can squeeze another 110DPS for an average of 520DPS at or around 200KM. It's not the 250KM range I was hoping for, but theres something quite addictive about taking out foes you can't actually see :p

You do realise how stupid you being here? do you not think that mission runners get suicided too? goons currently are running a project do this exact thing (check c&p) i would be very careful about advertising your wares. Anyhoo it could of also been a simple lag out, had it myself b4 where there was a bad lag and although i was getting pounded nothing was showing no ships in space or overview no lasers/missiles just a pummelling, they eventually appeared a couple of mins later

I remember not being able to do vengeance solo with lvl 3 in caldari bs and cruise missiles, crappy support skills and no drones..simply couldn't kill the last npc's tank

Of course it could happen. Then again... there is quite a difference between loosing a ship to lag in an NPC mission and a suicide gank now isn't there? Besides there are many reasons why it is less of an issue for some of us but sitting 200KM out of bounds pre-aligned in dead space would be a good place to to start.
Also... to be effective on this you'd have to know who to look for now wouldn't you
