If you haven't played it yet, shame on you! It's brilliant, amazing graphics, storyline is fantastic, music is great. It feels like your playing a in a VERY good and entertaining movie.
It's a very good RPG and it's even worth the money (gasp). Don't miss out

I expected more from it tbh. Too much hype. most sidequests sucked bigtime and there were just too many bugs. Getting stuck in elevators, weapons not cooling down,...
The on foot fighting was very fun though

Never got stuck in an elevator, but the weapons not cooling down is a Biotic ability that was used on you. You can use it too, forgot what it was called though. ----

Well, I never managed to get stuck in the elevator, but the overload getting stuck happens often enough, however, its not always a biotic/tech ability at fault, managed it a couple of time with no opponents around just to test it. Its especially common when you use high explosive ammo. (which guarantees an overheat after 1 shot but with phenomenal damage)
Other than that I really enjoyed the game, busy with my 4th play through at the moment.

well I play the game at 1400x1050 with every detail maxed out and it looks pretty good to me. The only lower resolution textures i've noticed sofar are the Armour (which is supposedly to improve performance) and the face of Garrus, which appears to have a low-res texture layer forced on top at Ultra high detail. (there's a player made fix for it, but I didn't want to edit the game files by hand to correct it, I'll wait for the patch) |

That was probably a Starforce game, since that was DRM notorious for screwing up PCs badly. All this games protection does is verify your CD-key online when you launch it for the first time, and then every time you patch or download some downloadable content (the first of which should have been available at launch but has been delayed). What I dislike about the protection however is the fact that it only allows for install on 3 separate systems (reinstalls, unless you change the hardware in the PC don't count). But I solved that by downloading the ***** for it after installing from the DVD, no online checking business so no install used. |

I seriously have no idea why this game is so loved. It's "good", but nowhere near justifies the hype it gets.
Let me tell you why: - Uncharted worlds. Copy & Paste much? Un-detailed much? ZERO visible vegetation even if the description says that it's a jungle planet. Every base one of 2 or 3 standard designs with random doorways blocked off and random crate placement. Every planet the same gravity, regardless of its description - unchanged vehicle physics everywhere.
- Nearly no consequences (or if there are, they don't matter at all) to your choices except in a very few instances.
- Boring characters. Most seem like cardboard stereotypes, and the way you interact with them and your paragon/renegade choices have no influence on them whatsoever, apart from 2? little life/death moments. It's not like any of them would leave your party because you're behaving like a total ass / against their beliefs.
- Story. Seriously, what the ****? "See, these here are the EEEEVUL Reapers, they made all this to cyclically eliminate all biological sentient lifeforms, because.. wait, give me a second. YO, WRITER DUDE? WHY DID THEY DO THIS, EH? .... Well, actually, we didn't think of a reason, we didn't think you'd need one, it's all so nicely black and white this way, don't you agree? Guys? ... Guys?" Also the whole biologicals vs AIs conflict, be it Geth or just non-robotic AIs like the one in the side quest in the Citadel seemed mildly ******** to me. Again, no real justification for it apart from the by now outdated prejudice against stereotypical evil AIs in science fiction. But maybe I just loevs me some Bankian Culture drones too much .
- ****ty combat. I won't bother to explain this, it should be obvious.
- Having to buy your own equipment even after becoming a Spectre. Seriously, WHAT?
Also, inconsistent / implausible technology. Be it medical (Joker anyone?), AI (Geth stupidity), manually piloted space ships (yea, riiiite), under-powered Reapers, etc: - Why the reapers didn't just seed the whole galaxy with self-replicating nanites to eliminate ANY life form they come across I'll never understand. Would probably even have been enough time to just reduce every planet even barely in the vicinity of the Citadel capable of sustaining life to an asteroid belt if they had used self-replicating drones coupled with FTL travel.
- Why do you have to drive around on a planet to find **** if you have a perfectly functional ship in orbit and NOT EVEN CLOUD COVER on a planet which conditions are no danger to humans (i.e. no radiation interfering with scans etc)? All the enemies on the surface should be NUKED FROM ORBIT the moment the Normandy arrives, because it's the only way to be sure!
- No implants / personal nanotech / gengineering.
- No antigrav / flight capability on the Mako.
- Seriously stupid ship to ship combat. Getting so close to it that any effect of your weapons on the target would probably damage your own ship as well... what?
- GLOWING WEAPONS. ON YOUR BACK. CAMOUFLAGE ARMOR, BUT GLOWING WEAPONS. LET ME REITERATE: GLOWING WEAPONS, FOR ****S SAKE. SHOOT ME NOW PLEASE.
I could probably think up more, but... WALL OF TEXT already. The only point of the OP I'd agree with is the great music, btw |

just to clarify the reapers dotn exactly exterminate all life, they prety much started life in our galaxy then come and "harvest" all of us for slaves/food/batterys/pets whatever it realy isnt clear on that part

I did my first run through on a Soldier at normal difficulty, 2nd as Engineer also on Normal, third as Vanguard on Hardcore and currently doing a Biotic on Veteran. Add some variation to what you do, make different choices (paragon or renegade) do the main worlds in a different order (makes a difference in the cut scenes along the way, quite interesting) and ofcourse, grab achievements. Engineer with Assault Rifle skill was a lot easier than just pistol, trust me.

What DRM?
Awesome game.. well worth the money. Just goes to show.. you can have a game desiged for both console and PC and not feel like your still playing the console version due to shitty ass UI.. Mass Effect feels polished and besidings looking great.. very nice storyline and voice acting. Playing it reminds me of Dues Ex or Stalker. -----------

It's a good adventure RPG, but has its share of problems.
+Great storytelling and immersion +looks good +good gameplay(mostly) +fun
-choices you make only have real difference in a few occasions -level scaling (enemies and loot) -copy-paste planets/structures -limit on number of items you can carry. Doens't help that you autopick items, so you have to take all the crap in the inventory. They don't even stack, so you have to manage them frequently and you have to do it 1 item at a time .
To sum things up it's a good action RPG. Good main campaign with little else of interest. It has little replay value, since you can do most things with every character and because of the levelscaling.

I recently bought a game, installed it, everything went smoothly. And then when I tried to start it, it told me I had to install some security shit. I mean, WTF? There was no mention of it on the game's packaging, and quite frankly I feel conned. I refuse to install it as a matter of principle, so I can't play a game that I paid for.
This is why I won't be buying Mass Effect until they get rid of their stupid DRM protection. __________________________

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 06/07/2008 00:01:44 Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 06/07/2008 00:00:18 Mass Effect is overall a good game. The storyline is interesting and the fact that the not all background info is revealed, is because Mass Effect is planned as the first part of a trilogy. With no doubt more info about the Reapers will be revealed in the second and third part.
The gameplay combines shooter and RPG elements and is in times quite fun. The downsides are, that exploring planets and sidequests is rather uninteresting. This game also follows the annoying trend of Bioware games, to become shorter and shorter.
Baldurs Gate had over 200 hours of gameplay with lots of quests, some of them could only being found with multiple playthroughs and most of all, it felt epic, when you finally beat the game. Mass Effect can be completed within 8-10 hours, without missing anything from the main story.
I can live with the fact that there are no really good or evil choices. You have to rescue the galaxy in any case, you can only choose if you want to be real bastard while doing so, or not. The ending also changes a bit, depending on your choices, but that is all.
It just annoys me that the game is too short and EA/Bioware treat there customer base like pirates, with the DRM.
