I know the issues of lag has been beaten down ad nausea. However after having ran into the issue recently, I want to ask how other people deal with it. Specifically what tweaks are necessary to reduce the lag generated by the client. The specifics of my case are that I jumped to a gate with more than 80 ships near it. I was unable to do anything (the screen didn't even resolve). Next thing I see I am in a station with an evemail stating I died. |

hi m8.. i'm sure atm many players are expiriencing the same problems. before anything else i would sugest to check your conection with a tool called pingplotter (just ask mr. google) - perhaps there is a point in your connection to eve servers where you have packet loss.
but to me it seems that there are problems with eve servers and certain internet providers...

Thanks roq. I've been using pingplotter for a while now (business), but are there any tips on configuring my client to maximize network performance while playing EVE? I mean I read all the time about massive Goon Fleets and battles and engagements that have 40 or 60 ships fighting at a time. I don't see how that can be possible with the amount of lag I've been seeing the past few days. |

Edited by: roq deelim on 30/06/2008 18:42:38 first of all you should have good hadware in your pc. eve, especially the premium client, needs quite a bit of cpu-power. you need a solid grapics card ofc. too. a little bit of ram and a fast hdd should do the rest. there is a way to speed some things up with a ram-disk-trick i used few months ago, but it wasn't that heavy boost at all..
i had absolute the same problem...jumping trough a gate where there were about 30 ships on the other side...took me forever to load the grid. i must have been floating at the gate uncloaked for at least 40 seconds..if those were enemies i would wake up in station myself....luckily the camp was firendly...

It's most likely *not* your machine. I run a Core2Extreme QX9650 with 4 gigs of Ram and 2 8800 GTX in SLi mode and every time there's a fight with 30+ ships involved somewhere in 0.0 I get exactly the same problem. I have a 16 MBit dsl line getting top notch pings, no packet loss, etc.
There is absolutely no frickin way that this could be on my side, especially if everyone in fleet cries out loud at the same time. Regardless if you have effects on/off or brackets or whatever.
"My ship does not respond" "I see my weapons firing but no ammo is used" "You just died" "No I didn't I'm still orbiting the gate, even tho I can't do anything" "Yes you are, I see your pod" "But I still see him orbiting as well" ... ...
It's the same thing everywhere you look. I have it all... lost ships, pods, implants whatever just because I actually wanted to play the game. Experience the big fleet fights (If measured in lag, 30+ ships are a VERY big fleet), dig it out with my alliance mates and friends together.
Of course... it has to be us. You petition it, they tell you "Everything was within game mechanics" or that they were not able to detect any errors. It's obvious that admitting the lag problem might spoil their income. "Big fleet fights at 1 frame per minute" is nothing you can sell subscriptions with. Even tho it would surely be a nice gesture towards the existing player community, especially if there would at least be some compensation in it. It's not like replacing lost stuff due to lag is costing any money (Except from the guy in the chair using the admin software).
As I see it, there is absolutely nothing you can do about the fleet lag, even buying a 5k computer won't help. It's just not your fault m8. --

Yep, I have to agree with the above. CCP has built a game its back end simply can't support. There's really nothing more that can be said, it clearly doesn't work.
It's a shame really, as it's an incredible game outside of the completely game breaking lag.
