Once again the Republic shows itself as one of the greatest enemies of the minmatar people by continuing to allow this disgrace known as the republic to continue to exist, a true and fair vote would have been to decide if the people of the republic still wanted the republic to carry on, lets give the people a referendum on the republic, lets end this abomination to our race and split our regions under seperate tribal controls uniting when the need arises.
As for the new prime minister? Well a back stabbing traiterous dog was removed from power and the power has now been handed over to a moron, our people deprived of change, what else can I say?

I'm not familiar with 'democracy', but a 'vote' with only one candidate is a charade ? The turnout was low and although it's claimed the populace is 'with' Shakor, this is likely because his political enemies have either fled, been sidelined or been murdered.
This does not look like a government. This looks like a military junta and the final rise of the warlords in Republic space. |

If there had been another candidate for Prime Minister, do you honestly believe Shakor would have lost? In all likelihood, Shakor would have defeated any rival in a landslide. Maleatu Shakor has been a well-loved public figure for most of his life, now more than ever. He has the support of the Chiefs and the people. The argument that he has no mandate, simply because other potential candidates chose not to run against him, is naive at best and willful deception at worst.
The argument that low voter turnout detracts from his mandate is equally flawed. Better to consider how many people voted for Shakor even though he ran unopposed. They certainly didn't need to show their support by voting. They did so by choice, as a way to show their support. If those who chose not to vote truly wanted to express their displeasure at his candidacy, wouldn't it have been logical for someone with different political ideals to tap into that displeasure?
Finally, to any who may be upset that no one chose to run against Shakor for the sake of democracy, I ask you: What is more important? That the democratic nature of the Republic is upheld in the form of free and fair elections, no matter how many or how few candidates choose to run; or that there are always at least two candidates for office, no matter what? The former preserves the function of our Republic, while the latter would only preserve the form. |

Now I'm not an expert on democracy, but doesn't it usually take less than a week to count the votes?
It makes you wonder what strings had to be pulled to get the only candidate elected.

The amount of secrecy involved on that particular subject is intolerable even to myself. I haven't the foggiest as to whether the Mandate government is still intact...or whether the elders completely obliterated it. With the expose of that fateful arriviste Consulate Governor, I can only imagine the worst.
While there is no authoritative voice for the Mandate, it is none other than the truth that there is no other recourse than direct Amarr rule, I warrant. Most Ammatar pod-pilots with a 'history' don't fancy their chances on the wrong side of the border, whatever the Governor said.

Nebulous, my friend, I think you may have the wrong end of the spear. Maleatu Shakor represents the end of the democratic republic, not its continuation.
I think you need to speak with your Thukker people as to what he represents for them. After all, it was with their help that he is now in this position.
You ask for a "split [of] our regions [to] separate tribal controls[,] uniting when the need arises". Surely the rescue of our peoples from the Amarr is sufficient 'need' for unified tribal authority?
Of cause, as I have said elsewhere, time will tell. To be a doom-sayer at this point I consider a bit foolish, although I accept events may eventually prove me wrong. |

As a supporter of democracy, I felt that the election was a disgusting sham - there was no election, there was no choice. It's not that I don't think Shakor won't do a fine job, and finally bring the justice that the Amarr Empire has escaped for millenia - it's that I wish they'd just given him power, rather than hold an election with no other candidates. Democracy is not done in half-measures - it's all or none.
But.
The Minmatar Republic is not my country, and they are staunch allies who value freedom, liberty and equality whether or not they run a "truly" democratic government - a tribal council, as long as it does not abuse its powers, seems fair enough for now. I hope to see them reinstate a proper parliament at some point, but these are troubled times. |

At least Midular didn't just resign and hand over power as some were insisting. It's a pity there were no other candidates but at least this system has some shades of legitimacy.

Have to disagree with you completely, Nebulous. Shakor has ever bee an ardent supporter of Matari rights and Matari way of life. Following his example, large sections of Amarrian territory are now under Matari control, and this is only a beginning. It is common knowledge -- and the basis upon which that he won unanimous support from every tribe -- that he intends the rebuild the Matari Nation of old. Given that the Thukkers back him, too, this may soon be a reality.
Not sure what you've been hearing about him, but I'm thrilled to see him take the reigns.

I must disagree with Nebulous, but with a completely different take on what is going on than most of you. While Prime Minister Midulan was largely ineffective, her attempts at rapproachment gave some of us the license to fly in Amarr space and free slaves openly through the market and covertly by force of arms. She had my vote, my support while in office, and I offer her my thanks for her service. It may have been a failure in the end, but I agreed and still agree that it needed to be tried. Prime Minister Shakor is not a moron in the least. He is a great man; a man of great abilities, great courage, and great convictions, who has repeatedly risked much for our people. He is well-loved and an stirring orator, and I think that he would have won a true election had we been offered one. I also believe that he will be an effective leader in these difficult times.
However, this is not just a matter of a strong leader stepping up to the challenge of the Prime Minister's office in a time of need. If it were I would be behind him. Instead he comes with new allies backing him, as both their ambassador and as our new leader, and I do not trust them nor that he leads us down our natural path instead of the one that they would choose for us.
Given what news we do have, it would seem that the so called "Elder" fleet invaded the Amarr not to liberate slaves in general, but specifically to save the recently-discovered last known remnants of the Starkmanir. I applaud this, I cannot help but applaud this, as who knows what would have happened to our lost siblings otherwise? The puppets of the Mandate said that they would be open to negotiations on their fate, but the Amarr may well have demanded to enforce the edict of Ardishapur and wiped them out. However this was done for their own purposes not ours, as they have hidden the Starkmanir somewhere away from us as well as the Amarr, and now we bear the brunt of the hostilities that their actions provoked without any apparent support of arms. Instead they tell us that the war that they provoked is our war, and that we must fight it now.
With them also came the stifling of all debate in Parliament. Many of the tribal Chiefs have sparred with the PM on the floor of Parliament before, but now they stand at his back with nothing but words of support? Times are difficult, but we are not a monolithic people and there have always been words of dissent. All of the dissent now is coming from private citizens and not any of our leaders. That not a single politician among our fractious people stood against the PM in the election, if only to be contrary, makes me concerned that they have been threatened or bribed. The sudden deaths of so many in our government, however justified, cannot but have even the loyal concerned for their safety. Times are difficult, but this level of unity seems forced to me. Do we embrace without any debate or dialog at all these strangers who claim to be the wisest of the wise among us but have demonstrated nothing but anger and blood?
Meanwhile our friends the Gallente - who have stood strong with us for well over a hundred years - are suffering greatly as a side effect of the "Elder" invasion of Amarrian space, and we have yet to hear a word of sympathy from our new PM or his allies. All I hear are marching boots and words of war. I had been preparing myself to join our militia to fight for our future as a people. Now I do not know. My best friend is Gallentean. How do I look her in the eye if I do? Who are our real enemies? Who are our real friends? I once saw black and white, but these "Elders" have taken that clarity from me.
I am afraid for us. I am afraid that we are welcoming a dictatorship out of the distant past that we have forgotten because of our sufferings under the dictatorship of the more recent past. We the people of the Republic have problems now, serious problems with poverty and health, and I do not see any sign that these "Elders" care in the least.

It makes you wonder what strings had to be pulled to get the only candidate elected.
Considering you're about to corronate a heretic as Empress and the living embodiment of "God", a heretic who has blatantly defied your traditions and scriptures, perhaps your mind should be wondering about the strings being pulled in your own failing Empire. I'm no expert, but shouldn't she be dead? A one-candidate run off seems mundane by comparison...

I admit my labelling Shakor a moron may have been a bit harsh, but that is not my main problem, I still refuse to acknowledge the republic as the government of the matari people, while many Thukker back the new government I do not, I appreciate our standings reset but our greatest allies who's home we share with "the angel cartel" remain on top of the republics most hated list, above even those of the slaver race, this means as individual pilots working for our agents will result in us recieving bad standings and eventually hostile actions from the republic.
A vast shake up of the republics policies and even a name change to something more suitable than "the minmatar republic" may go some way to truly uniting the tribes.

Edited by: Kade Jeekin on 01/07/2008 21:15:11 Nebulous, the Republic is the political organisation of some of the smaller tribes, and the Krusual, Brutor, Sebiestor, and Vherokior tribes. It is not per se, nor claimed to be, a government of all the Minmatar peoples.
Should the Thukkers choose to join the Republic, they will do it of their own free will, as a tribe. I had not heard of a Republic-Thukker standings reset, thank you for bringing that to my attention. This is good.
The Angel Cartel are not a tribe. Their recent actions alone, where they attacked Minmatar people attempting to cross to Gallente space, during the Thukker backed attack on Amarr, requires some serious justification.

You mean a vast shake up and name change much like that which is describe in this news article?
Perhaps sweeping changes in foreign policy subtly hinted at by the current war in and near the Bleaklands and discussed in Prime Minister Shakor's inaugural speech?
As to the Angels ... well, I'm not sure what to tell you. They've been killing Matari for years, and selling slaves to the Empire ... I'd be surprised if they were invited to any state dinners any time soon.

Well Karin Midular was good at speeches also..... I hope you all prove me wrong and Shakor becomes the leader of the republic that changes things for good.
I think it has become easy as of late to pin certain labels onto various pirate factions in the same way Midular pinned such a label on the Thukker tribe, I won't deny that certain cartel members have engaged in slavery, as much as a republic supporter can not deny that republic officials have sold their people to the empire in exchange for backhanders and luxury stays at amarr empire facilities. The fact remains that most hostilities between the cartel and the republic are tit for tat, if we track back through the history books you will find strong evidence to suggest it was the cartel that recieved the first hostilities from the republic and that in their own home of the great wildlands where in theory any crime commited is not illegal, the ironic thing is that much of the technology used on minmatar ships has been bought from the cartel even though it was stolen by the cartel originally, the republic standings would suggest the biggest threat to minmatar security is the angel cartel, this is far from the truth as long as the amarr empire and ammatar mandate continue to exist. While on the subject of pirate factions the most overtly slaver pirate factions i.e. the bloods and it's supporters remain nowhere to be seen on the republics most hated list, this is what I mean by the shake up of the republic policies, new talks and standing changes need to be implemented.

Leave it to an Imperial to believe there are only two forms of government to choose from...
Before the Empire came and visited death and misery upon our worlds, we lived under neither Republic nor Empire. The Matari Nation thrived, and we lived in freedom. Now, we return to our roots. It's really not as complex or drastic a step as a great many people seem to want to think.
